I finnally have the DC DVD. i am NOT disappointed. I thought i would be. I havent watched the whole movie yet. gonna watchn it with my girl. But the first part is some kinda comic booky panel thing introducing the Greeks versus Persians story this is kinda based on. I dont really need that, and if they do it anywhere else in the movie, which they must, i wont like that either, but .....they have interviews with the cast; Cochise, Swan, Ajax,Luther, Walter Hill (seems like he might be a Dik, but, whatever)
4 featurettes and they're fairly long too. cant complain. It's just One feature split into 4 parts, but im with it. Better than nothing. I do think the perfect Edition would have been a cast/crew commentary with the one long featurette and the original DVD movie that we all already had, and of course, the trailer.

Well, now. I am finally ready to review The Warriors, Ultimate Directors cut.
Synopsis of original film: New York. In the middle of the night, a gang summit and truce are called. Cyrus, the leader of the Gramercy Park Riffs, tells nine delegates, from a hundred gangs that one gang could run the city if they kept up the truce. All together they outnumber the police, and potentially, anyone sent in to aid the police. During this meeting, The Warriors are blamed for the unraveling of this plan and must trek their way back home to Coney Island, 27 long miles away. The question, is the truce still on?....
Special Features---85% These kick butt. Featurettes and an introduction. All the interviews with cast you could want. Insights and behind the scenes goings on with all the major stars of The Warriors. Plus, the Trailer, which is an eerie event in itself with creepy John Carpenter music. This DVD is easily worth the $13.56 i paid for it and then some. I find it curious that the regular DVD that came out years ago is still listed for twenty dollars most places as this new Directors cut has all the things we want on a DVD for almost half the $25.00 i paid for it back in 2001.
Actual Film transfer with new "Cartoon" cuts---45%
The film itself is now littered with Cartoon Transitions. Some scenes freeze frame and transition to handrawn "Comic book" panel style to move on to the next scene. There are little Comic book boxes in most of them that say things like "Meanwhile..."
and "Union Square" Stylistic, to be certain, but quite honestly, done before. And Quite unnecessary if you've seen the original film. While an introduction by Director Walter Hill (The Getaway, 48 Hours, Red Heat and the oft under-appreciated Southern Comfort
[No, the other one] ) is long awaited by fans, he merely tells the viewer in an aloof way that he doesnt DO commentaries and that the studio got in his way and that he really envisioned this movie as a re-told tale of a small group of Greek warriors on Persian soil in a comic book veign. This, as we shall discuss, was not always a good thing. One scene where some of the Warriors are coming out of a subway station is all but cut away with a comic book panel that takes away the individual reactions of our heroes as they look toward the street and something that is surely getting their attention. One warrior sees something and then another, then another, then another, and finally back to the first, to reveal they are staring at 7 of the famed Baseball Furies patroling the area at that precise moment. A gang with painted Kiss-like faces in baseball uniforms ( which you will no doubt recognize when you see them, regardless of whether you've seen the movie or not). Swinging bats. In the middle of the night. A classic introduction. Well. It was. All that, i'm told, is insulting to fans who appreciate the great interviews, footage, and candor of the featurettes but don't like the comic-book-panel transitions that make the film feel as if all of it's events are cartoonish and could NEVER happen. The way the film was in 1979, a large New York street gang COULD unite the surrounding factions, and get them to direct their energies toward taking over, as is quoted in the film; "One Bourough at a time...." I doubt that any of them would be wearing baseball uniforms, however, but then, who am i to say?

This is well known. I'll tell ya what I didn't know which I found to be really cool...Luther didn't speak to any of the Warriors until the beach scene. I didn't know that.

So both R1 and R2 versions are definitely identical then? Just comes down to which cover art you prefer (if you have a mult-regional player) - I am in the minority of liking the R1 design better so I think I'll go with that )(also a few pounds cheaper).

Egro, are you in Europe? If so, the PAL R2 version is going to have 100 more lines of Picture resolution meaning a 20 % sharper picture. Would be worth it. :) d

Yes, in Scotland Dave.

I have heard this quite often but to be honest I've never noticed any real difference and have a number of R1 discs with terrific picture quality (Criterion's new The Man Who Fell to Earth R1 easily outsrips the standard R2 DVD for pic quality)

Gotcha! I recently got the Lord Of The Rings Extended versions in PAL and they easily blow away the R1 in picture quality. It all does depend on the transfer though. The PAL version will almost always look better than the NTSC if they are taken from the same new HD transfer.

Cheers! d

Dave, yes the Criterion R1 edition of The Man Who Fell to Earth will be a different (superior) transfer to that used for the standard R2 release.

Mmm - you've got me thinking now...I might go for the R2 of The Warriors Director's Cut after all! :D
