I always thought it was in fact one of the strongest scenes in the film. It shows The Warriors "in action" without any punches being thrown. It shows that there are other things a gang has to do/go through that do not involve actual punching and fighting.
And of course, it introduces Mercy. Swan staring at the Orphans' leader to see how he reacts to Mercy questioning his manhood is priceless. As is The Fox's comment to Mercy, as is Swan's angry "lame f****" remark. Definitely a great scene.

I thought Apache Ramos of the Orphans woulda made a great Warrior. The Orphan leader Paul Greco did a good job acting as if her was just a bit mentally dim. That lazy eye thing was great. Duh!

You know what I just noticed and can't ignore now which drives me crazy. When this scene starts and Swan first sees them. There is a flashing light that shines on them every two seconds. This flashing lasts until Swan says "come on this way" and they walk a little further to say hello to the Orphan King and his Prince Apache.
"When we see the ocean we figure we're home, we're safe."
