Contributor Steven Wilson from the excellent Home Theater Forum website has received an early copy of the Region 1 DVD and has this to say:
Just received my copy of the disc today and popped it into my player to see some of the differences made to the film and all i can say is i'm very dissapointed. The running time of the film is roughly 1 minute longer than the original version of the film and the only difference seems to be a small animated(like a comic book)scene, telling about a greek army isolated in the middle of the persian empire trying to get back home with a voice over by Walter Hill(I think)and saying that it was a story of courage and the warriors is also a story of courageand takes place sometime in the future. The scene runs for just under 1 minute!.Part of the opening daytime scene you see on some tv versions on coney island is included in one of the featurettes though.
I've noticed at well that some of the scene transitions have been changed to reflect the fact that Walter Hill considers the film to like a comic book,an example is when the warriors are going for the train after the conclave, rembrant is marking the grave,he notices the rest of them are away and runs after them shouting wait for me.then scen freezes and turns into the panel of a comic book complete with the wait for me caption at the bottom then the camera pans down to another panel showing the gramercy riff's building complete with caption reading "somewhere in gramercy park",then a few more comic book panels before it wipes to live action again.
No commentary.Walter Hill says on the disc that he prefers to let his films speak for themselves.I've seen seen some sites saying that the UK version will have a commentary but I seriously doubt it,and 7 deleted/extended scenes but theres no mention of any of these on the BBFC site yet.Just an introduction by Walter Hill,4 featurettes running about 14mins each, the original trailer and some previews.

It's not cruel it's
criminal and after being told that it will contain director's commentary this review suggests we won't.

They know what we want as they read the forum all the time. They check the site for our ideas so they owe us the complete package.

News circulating around the net suggests that there will be more deleted scenes and a commentary and I can confirm that this is the case.
I might be completely wrong, but I am sure I had heard something a while ago about a standard edition DVD (replacing the current one) and a special edition.
Don't worry about it yet guys!!

check out the HTF thread with the comic book shots. Ugh. And no commentary on this release according to Stephen who has a copy. Are they really gonna do a 3rd release?

Why should we be grateful for a product that markets itself as "a all singing and all dancing" ULTIMATE DIRECTORS CUT when it doesn't even have a commentary from the director. This is particularly insulting as most DVD's has this as a feature. You may scribe to the idea of "something but than nothing" but it is that kind of exceptance of a second rate product that allows corporate business to use you as it's personal cash cow.
I can only hope that the rumours of additional features, such as director's commentary and 7 deleted scenes is true but I am not hopeful considering the number of reviews that suggest otherwise.
By the way CAN YOU DIG IT, have you a broken keyboard because writing everything in CAPS is considered as rude.

I dunno guys. I LOVE the flick but no commentary, no full deleted scenes and one of my fave films of all time being turned into "Creepshow"... this doesn't seem that "special" or "ultimate" to me anymore.
but what do I know....

Dave,
Funny, I was thinking
Creepshow as well! As a fellow HTF'er and
Warriors enthusiast, I share your pain at this disc not having all the bells and whistles (or some that you don't really want)

.
At the same time, I'm happy to see the studio putting so much into another edition of this film--did you see the site they put together to promote this thing?!--even if it is coming to coincide with the release of the video game and eventual remake. I'm quite excited about the featurettes, which if you add them together come to nearly an hour .
Considering how many times we see the multiple release pattern with the big-budget Hollywood films, it's heartening to see a genuine cult film get the special treatment. I'm interested in seeing Hill's vision, because he is the auteur after all, but I will certainly hang onto to my standard edition (and my prized Joe Bob Briggs Monstervision tape with the extra footage). As far as commentaries go, that's up to Mr. Hill to decide and it isn't something he believes in--so be it...I still eagerly await this disc.

Wow, if this is all true, that's not the "Ultimate Director's Cut," it's more of an "OK Here's A Slightly Altered Cut." "Ultimate Director's Cut" usually means a lot of additional scenes. Real scenes, not the comic-book scenes. I think that's a little insulting - if you can't watch it and figure out it has a "comic-book style," then it's not for you. You shouldn't have to be hit over the head with it. But I think the reason so many (like all of us here) love the movie is because yes, it's a different kind of gang film and it's like a living comic book. We don't need to be told so, so blatently.
Instead of being bulled to, I'd rather they just put the version that's on DVD now out again and add the featurettes as "new Featurettes Edition." I'd pay another 13 bucks for an hour of featurettes.
But hey, maybe there is hope.

You would hope thats the case but it looks more like they have taken a opportunity to cash in on our hopes.
