Just thought if anyone had any ideas of how the Furies became a gang. I think my view would be they are a load of true baseball players who couldnt make it into the team/s and thought about getting their own back on people, thus forming The Baseball Furies.
Any other thoughts?

I always thought of the Furies as escaped mental patients. They attacked some baseball team called the Furies and stole their bats and clothes. Of course they had to be somewhat lucid to be invited by Cyrus. But they're certainly crazy.

Here is my story of how it happend. Enjoy.
THE RISE AND FALL OF THE FURIES
Forward: In 1986 a journal was found in an old underground basement, according to the journal this was the hideout for the Baseball furies. The journal also had entrys by Cobain Brandon also known as COBB here is a basic history of the furies.
Cobain Branson a 19 year old guy always loved baseball only problem he could never hit anything but air. So one day he got upset at this put down his bat and started pumping iron. For 2 years he did this everyday until he was huge. Then he heard about these gangs that were being formed.
The next day he went to his buddy Thurmans house, thurman was also had a love for baseball, Cobain told him about these gangs and he wanted to start one up. Thurman agreed to get some more baseball fans to form this gang, Cobain decided on a nickname for him taking the first 3 letters from his first name, and one letter from his last name he named himself Cobb. He also decided on the name of the gang. It would be known as Baseball Furies.
A few weeks after the gang was going strong they had already gatherd enough soldiers to have ownership of 3 blocks of the city. They were also on the Riffs network. While this was happening Cobb was listing to Kiss and decided that there symbles would be painted face's. This continued for another 3 years until the Riffs formally invited the furies to the conclave. The furies went and almost got wrecked by some police. They got back to there hideout and then heard about The warriors killing Cyrus. They decided if they got the warriors they would gain more respect.
That night they almost got it.
The warriors got chased out of the train station and onto the streets of the furies. The furies chased them into the park after knocking only one dude out alot of furies got wasted. Fortunatly Cobb survived since he wasent there (not going by the game). He decided to get his revenge on the warriors.
After the warriors where back on Cony turf and Luther and his rouges where killed. The furies launched an assult on the warriors it was 3 nights of intence battles, knifes, molitovs and other weapons where used alot of warriors where killed in the processes only 5 warriors got away.
The main warrior that died was Swan and Mercy. They both died from knife wounds to the neck.
Again a few years passed and the warriors came back full force and killed the baseball furies. Cobb was found in the dump with his stomach cut open.
This is the end of the furies.

I would think that the Furies started out as a couple malcontent young hoodlums who's weapon of choice was the baseball bat. When they felt the need to formalize into an actual gang they just expanded the bat preference into a baseball theme. The face painting comes from a need for anonymity and intimidation and was possibly inspired by the mascots of the MLB. I guess this seems sort of dry but I think the preference for baseball bats betrays a brutal streak as long as Manhattan, which could have bee why they christened themselves Furies in the first place.

Hey maybe the Furies were guys that didn't make the team at like some local league so they got some bats and beat the hell out of all the players. "If you can't join 'em, beat 'em!"

The Baseball Furies were formed because somebody had a love of the Yankees and KISS. You know who it is.
And now that you mention it, the first time you ever see the Furies in the film is during the "Nowhere to Run" montage where they leave their hideout with the bats. THEY WERE NEVER AT THE MEETING AT ALL.
That's one fact I can't get around. They're well-known, but not at the meeting. Theories?

You are not right with that--the Furies were at the conclave, there is a thread (scroll downabout 40+ down by "electric eliminator") where someone points out 3 different scenes at the conclave, where you can see at least one of them in each. You just have to look a little harder.
Matt, I had to sigh to when you killed off S/M---

but I am not so sure I like the exile to Cuba much better---give me another senerio to go on please!!
Your story certainly is creative though and ties up some ends!! LOL

by BTW A.K.A the killer household appliance
the baseball furies- 1976-1981
the baseball furies were formed by a man named cobb who loved baseball, before the 70s the furies were just a gang of chums who played baseball at riverside, until at the summer of 75 when they fell foul to one of the many gangs being formed at the time. sometime afterwards they became a gang.
they started to gain rep, raiding the stores outside riverside and viciously beating any intruder that had the balls to step foot in riverside. one of their many victims was a war party of turnbulls that soldiered through riverside park. the cops were too scared to do anything, riverside residents lived in fear.they were most known however for their bizzare initiation tests, in which you would have to play a game of baseball with the furies and win, or at leastput up a good show.
they had riverside locked tight. cyrus noticed the baseball furies and put them on the riffs network in 77. in 79 the furies were invited to cyrus big meeting, the delegates were as follows-
COBB(yellow face paint)- warlord, tough, relentless and fast.
KUROSAWA(red face paint)- war cheif, has major skills with a bat, a big fan of swordplay and samurai flicks.
RYAN(green and white face paint)-heavy muscle, big and bulky strong but slow.
DARIEN(purple and black face paint)-heavy muscle, always looking for a fight, crazed and demented.
BJ(red and black)- soldier the middle, expressionless, deadly, bjs best freind.
ZACK(blue and red)-artist, dedicated soldier, never gives up.
JOEY(blue and black)- scout, italian, fights as good as he makes out.
AJAY(blue and red)-boombox carrier, good bat skills but just cant keep up.
CASEY(blue and red)-bearer, mysterious, a good soldier.
during the cop raid the furies escaped with no losses, they got out of vancortandt park and back to riverside thanks to cobbs good leadership. the furies decided that if they caught the warriors then they would become heroes and would be known all over new york. the rogues planned to meet them at the 96th street station, until they realised that the home team furies were already waiting for them. the rogues avoided the furies, a gang they had already met before and decided to wait for them at coney.
the warriors known as swan, cowboy, snow and ajax ran into the furies and realising theyre huge rep they ran. in the chase that followed snow and swan got around the furies and took down ajay who was falling behind. cobbs furies got dangerously close on cowboy and ajaxs tail, cowboy couldnt run anymore so ajax decided to give them a taste.
cobb took out cowboy as ajax took out zack and a showdown followed. overconfident cobb failed to get ajax and got wrecked. swan and snow caught up and helped ajax and cowboy out. kurosawa held his ground, bj went for snow but got caught in a headlock. kurosawa and bj were taken down in seconds, ryan watched helplessly, without their leader the furies became headless chickins and so ajax smashed ryan in the pelvis and broke it.
zack got up and tried to stop ajax until he got wrecked too, casey got ready for swan but quickly became a punching bag, joey got caught in snows arm lock and ajax performed a killer tandem attack. cobb got back up to face ajax and it was at this point cobb realised something- he couldnt fight without his bat, none of the furies could. ajax threw him in the air and finished him. darien was the last one left and went for swan, darien had him backed up against a tree darien almost took him down but swans brawling skills prevailed. the warriors had won and the furies winning streak was broken.
the furies were picked up by the cops and arrested that night, they took them in for questioning but cobb just smiled is eerie smile.they realised the furies were a mute gang and couldnt help with the cops inquiry. upon getting out of prison the furies got hold of riverside for another year, but lost it when the dark times of 70s new york ended.
