The book and the movie whats the comparison?

i saw the movie before i read the book so as i was readin it i tried to make the characters fit in, you know like i thought lunkface would be ajax, but about 15 pages in i got lost is it even the same plot, same gangs, and why didnt they keep it as the coney island dominatrs?

alot of the events are the same as the movie
however there are very different characters less fights some other events witch will keep you interested the gangs are not as comic-booky
and it's Hollywood they change stuff to make it a better movie

another thing was when Walter Hill was making the screenplay ---Sol Yurik didn't agree with some of the directions, or the additions he wanted to make, so he washed his hands of the project, so they had to change some things away from the book to keep the peace.

i think that the warriors names are just soo stupid in the book.walter hill mad a good desicion changing the names

I liked most of the names in the book
Bimbo was an odd choice but otherwise they whear very good names

The book is a bit more based on reality than the movie, Sol Yurick worked for the Department of Welfare in New York in the 50's and based his work on his experiences working on cases.  So a lot of the names and occurances are based from the time period and would seem pretty tame and out of date by the 70's. And the book is based more on the psychological and socialogical where the movie focuses way more on action.

Yurick also picked up the lingo from sitting in a van with holes in it listening to gangs on their turf

the book is worth reading but i would recommend reading it before watching the movie because it wont be what you expect

It's almost impossible to compare the two, because they fall under totally different genres.

The movie keeps the main story line of the book, but a lot of the events are replaced. It also focuses more on action, and entertainment value.

The book is very dark, and very much in tune with the psychology behind gangs and their mentality more than with the actual events.
