Did you ever get the impression that the Riffs look like an offshoot of The Black Panthers? I always thought so. Besides, there is not a single white member in this gang.

I've recognized that too. They do look like the Black Panthers and they don't have a single white dude there. They even have a salute when the leader says "Riffs" and they respond with a loud "YEAH RIGHT!!!!"

I noticed they were big, black, and looked very angry.
Besides that though I wouldn't put the Riffs next to Terrorists who killed others in the name of racism (Lets face it thats what they did they were no better than the Klans, or the Police)

Yea its a no brainer they were more open to racism in 1979 - from all sides. Remember Archie Bunker from the show all in the family? I love that episode where hes talking to his politicaly correct son in law. SON IN LAW-"dont you think calling females weaker is sexist?" ARCHIE BUNKER-" well men in caveman times had to be bigger and faster to catch woman to make them thier mate!" SON IN LAW-" well arch what about the smaller and slower guys back then?" ARCHIE BUNKER-"well there you got historys first FAGS" LOL

Ahh, All In The Family, what a great show. I still watch the re-runs. As per your obsevation regarding Arch being a racist, I guess you're right to a certain extent, but it could also be argued that the show actually opened a lot of doors to so called "minorities": Jews, Blacks, Latinos, gays, etc. The cool thing about Archie's character is the fact that he continues to learn through out life. Remember that episode of the Jewish guy (played by a Latino) who ends up murdered and Archie feeling like crap? Or how about when he and a few people get stuck in an elevator? Remember how excited he gets when the Latino pregnat woman gives birth and he gets all excited and remarks to the husband, "You've got yourself a little boy."
My point is that the biases I see in All In The Family are in one way or another a paradigm of greater things, good things.

I apoligize for not sharing your point of view. You seem to forget that Cyrus was their leader, and what the heck did he want to do? He wanted to take one borough at the time at all costs to eventually control the whole City.
The point that I am trying to make is that The Riffs are all black, just like the Black Panthers and they share some characteristics, like skt4477 pointed out.
Cheers.

I totally thought of the Panthers when I first saw Masai. My boyfriend finally broke down and joined mr after I'd hogged the TV for 6 nights in a row to watch it on tape, and the first thing he said was, "which gang is the riffs? The Black Panther one?" and we're both black.

Archie wasn't a true 'racist' in the traditional sense, even though he did feel whites were superior. Lionel Jefferson said it best a few times.. Once in fighting with Mike, when Mike brought up that Archie was the one who gave blacks a hard time and not him, Lionel said "but he doesn't know any better." Another time he said to Sammy Davis about Archie, "he's a good guy, I mean he'd never burn a cross on your lawn." And remember the KKK episode? Archie went up against the local Klan, saying he'd get his black brothers beside him to back him up!
Actually, in some respects Mike was no better than Archie. With the 'women are inferior' thing, in a few episodes Mike definitely leans in that direction (like when he wanted a male surgeon for his appendix, how he treated his wife like a slave to 'get the cookies in the kitchen' and more when his 'intellectual' friend came over, etc) and in one episode especially, Mike and Gloria fought the whole time because Mike felt women are inferior. Great line by Gloria, give or take a few words - "...but I'm smart enough to bring home the paycheck!" LOL!!

That's a very true comment about Archie - he wasn't passing judgement for the sake of supremacy; that's just the way things were then, that's the way a lot of people thought then, and yet it was never said outright. The fact that it was brought up on TV at all was a big deal.

Nothing to do with the Warriors but the brit 'comedy' Love Thy Neighbour ' from the 70's takes the cake if you are talking about TV racism ... oh .... how we laughed.

Old scrappy Arch should have kicked more ass in the series! Like good 'ol AL BUNDY did when he was the man of married with children. What the hell happened to cool sitcoms now a days? you got faggy ass will and grace and some other weird ass bullshit? WHERES THE EDGE? And mtv dosent even play music videos very much anymore they jus love playing reality shows of dumbass music celebritys. If they are gonna make a new reality series give it some attitude! Some edgyness! Like crazy rappers high on crack or drunken rockers smashing into hotels with a semi truck! dumbass pop stars and mtv piss me off.

It's pretty tough to have edge when the edge keeps getting pushed back further and further...they should either tone it down or just say 'screw it' and start baring asses!
Ha! i'm way off topic--i still think they look like panthers.

Theres no question about this. I actually alked about this in other threads. Not only black panthers, but Cyrus in general seems to be a mixture of Malcom X and Dr. King. He has an overempowering voive, with a big militant style, which connects to a more pasifist style like Ghandi. I truley believe this site was meant to be obvious. He has this united vision, but yet has a style of someone who has been through many battles. So yeah, the symbolic form of the black panthers is definatley there.
