50 to 100 miles from here

"Coney Island must be 50 to 100 miles from here!"
I always found it interesting when Vermin said that line. It was actually only about a 30 mile trip. I can understand him saying fifty miles, but a hundred? Probably why they never put Vermin in charge of directions

I think they were trying to create an illusion that they are an incredibly long distance from their home. Sorta making it seem like it's an incredible, unmanagable distance, which it might seem like to them as well.

I always found that funny. It was a pure fear-guided statement.
Could be 50, could be DOUBLE that. We're so screwed.

Swan: "We've never even been to the Bronx before!"
Obviously all these guys didn't realize how far they where from the Bronx and believe me that subway ride feels like 50 to 100 miles with all the stops it makes. All these cats came from poor families, I don't think they left Coney very much. Even Mercy herself expressed: "I never been anywhere".

Well I guess in any bad situation, a single solitary moment can actually feel like an entire lifetime to anyone. Even if you take the train straight back, with out any trouble, it can still feel like forever, especially with a lot of worry and pressure on your whole mind. Sometimes when your dealing with a troubled situation, intend on making exaggeration, just like Vermin. I don;t really know if Vermin was being pessimistic like he always is, or he is just a dumb street punk?, because I am sure the whole gang is not dumb. If anything there pretty bright for a street gang. But like I said when you are in a serious delima, you automatically think of the worst case scenario and make things wore than they really are, even if the warriors were actually in a horrible obstacle.

It makes the movie much more dramatic and shows the struggle all the way back home.

Well put, LIONS. I think this pretty much sums it up, especially the part about all the subway stops. On my last trip to Coney, it was about a 40-minute subway ride from the Wall Street area (lower Manhattan, for those unfamiliar with NYC - I would guess about 15 miles total trip). In the book, it turned out they were 27 miles from Coney, so that would be at least an hour-long subway ride. (In an hour, we'll be in the big C.I. pretty much clinches that). Vermin knew how long it had taken to get there, but he didn't know the distance they had covered; and because of his limited travel within the city, had a much larger, exaggerated view of its size.
And of course, the desperation had to have added to it.
And the fact that Vermin seems to be the kind of person who Over-Exaggurates a lot, lol

This makes me wonder if anyone has ever calculated how much of the 30 mile distance they covered on foot vs. by subway.
Shouldn't be too hard to do since every gang they encounter is easily traced back to a turf.
Surely one of us has done the math.

probably it's just a wild guess because of the long train ride and stuff..it also gives the suspense and impression that the warriors will have a hard time going back..

Sorry, I really thought this topic had been discussed before, maybe it was an off the cuff comment from a differn't topic - definitely been spoken about though.

Also Vermin's way of talking there might not have been meant to be literal, just meaning far.
