Luther's Purpose?

Well I just thought about this. People have different way of seeing things. What if Luther shot Cyrus becuase he strongly disagreed with Cyrus idea. Maybe he was to scared to speak his mind. Of course he said the reason why he shot Cyrus was becuase he liked doing things like that.I mean what other reason why he could've shot the magic man?

Anyone think this is possible?

No really I think Luther wanted you all to think he was crazy. He figured if he shoot Cyrus is dream will never come true and everything will stay the same. Instead of letting his voice be known he expresses it by using the bullet.

I may end up being logical once again with this response...luther's purpose in the movie: we need to see a villain in a movie or there isn't any meaning to the movie...every story needs a plot of some sort with a villain...Luther just had some self-esteem issues he needed to take care of...he seemed to enjoy stepping on the rest of his gang members to make himself feel powerful and it worked for him well...they were quiet...they listened and followed every one of his nonsense plans...and of course he was jealous of Cyrus...it wasn't only because he "liked doing things like that" but he also wanted to destroy the happiness and dreams of others to make himself feel better...or kill others so he can feel happy that there's someone else who was worse than himself...and because of this...look where he ended up...in hands of the Riffs...

Well Baby Bear, I don't think he did it cause he crazy... I mean he could also be a little bit crazy, ye, but IMO there was a plan behind luther. We'll never know about W. Hill's real ideas, anyway I think he wanted audience to suppose luther "didn't JUST like doing things like that", I mean he is only 75% crazy... and to me proof is/are 2 phone calls.
That will be a good "prequel" starting point!!!
Plus, who really is the man on the other phone side? Who's the real betrayer???

A Riff, or the real shooting "mind", maybe luther is really crazy and wasn't calling anybody....
... here's 2 good links about...

maybe he did it for respect off his own gang and make his own gang fear him, because he actually dares to shoot a top man in front of loads of people, to stay at the top of the rogues, that could be an idea or maybe he was just a plain sicko

Speculation aside, Luther was the leader of the Rogues; he gave the orders. He answered to no one but himself.  If cyrus's plan had worked and there was one unified gang, then Luther would be just another soldier; a small fish in a big pond.  Its like being demoted.  I would imagine Luther takes a cut of all the spoils from the Rogues less than respectable activities.  Greed could have been a motivation.  A unified gang would have no reason to pay him a leadership payment.

Luther himself said he had no reason and I wont repeat the line as we all should know it

but I dont believe that... it had to be something it's like a murder mystery there has to be a motive...not just for fun although Luther is that crazy.

I think Luther could act like th hero if all the other gangs failed think about it he was being posted on where they were..

"...we could hit them at 96th street station"

no we know Luther didn't say that but if the other rogues knew the were heading there so did Luther....plus he made it to Coney and just happened to be following them on the boardwalk..he  would of tried to kill them and then say it was the only choice they had...he may of killed one of his own with the gun just to make sure that the riffs thought he stole it off them. Weird theory I know but that's what I think.

I think it was the drive for him.  He liked the rush feeling of it all.

i agree there must be some other reason why he shot cyrus and i can't belive that no one saw him do it i mean out of all them prople no one saw luther shoot cyrus there must of been someone who saw him.

In the last posts I've seen this kind of thought: nobody saw luther shooting Cyrus, apart Fox and that Gang Member!!! Weird!!!
So, I was wondering and I also ask you guys: can you only imagine the noise of a gun shot??? It's a loud noise... several people should have noticed luther, even if there was a Great Spree!!!

End of story, our opinions are all good... but only about this, once again... it's ok, it's the Movie.

My theroy is that maybe the police had paid Luther to shoot Cyrus. If Cyrus was the leader of the biggest gang in the city,he would most likely be hard to get to by the police. The police knew about the conclave, but wouldnt be able to get a unknow person close to Cyrus. If Cyrus was successful in uniting the gangs the police would lose there power. If Cyrus was shot by a cop then there would be mass riots. If he got shot by unknown rival then it wouldn't be as bad. The real 1979 NYC police were know for coruption.(see American Gangster) After the shot the lights come on and the police raid begins. This would be a good diversion for Luther/Rouges to not be seen and to get away. The police were also helping the Riffs to look for the Warriors to pin it on them?  Maybe the NYC police had the Rogues leader in jail or they worked with the corupt cops and didnt want to lose there position with the police dept if Cyrus was succesful. When Luther is at the candy store he says something to crospey like (were set)$$? after checking in? Maybe he was checking in with the police as to being paid. The other 8 Rogues knew Cyrus was going to be shot so Luthers NO REASON lone crazy man explination dosen't fit. Either that or Cyrus was shot by the guy on the grassy knoll

maybe 2 sets of corrupt cops one set for rougues one set for the riffs?
