Modern Horror Movies... as good as the old ones?

Post by Jim1972UK »

I've recently been building up my DVD collection, the majority of which are horror films, a genre I've liked since I was about 14 or 15.

Of the ones I have boought the large percentage have been at least 15 years old, if not older and so it has got me wondering as to whether or not the horror films that we see now adays are as good as the ones from 20-30 years ago?

I mean if you think back to some of the major movies there have been there's The Exorcist, The Shining, The Omen Trilogy, to name just a couple, and I am sure the older forum members will be able to name a whole host more, but nowadays there seems to be maybe 1 or 2 decent movies every year at best.

Brother, everything that is being made in Hollywood is a remake of a remake of the original, there is no creativity because they are looking to cash in quick, and not bring to an audience something of substance, proof in this,is the Price of Movie Tickets and concession..all about money, thank god I can at least buy the DVD and see what great Horror movies were like,
Cause even right now I wish Jason Voorhies could add Paris Hilton to his BODYCOUNT..cause House of Wax,made my DVD Player melt from all the bad acting...

Sorry but i think all horror movies are lame, the only one that i found entertaining was Saw which is rather new
So imo Saw is the only good one

Nightmare on elm street, hellraiser, texas chainsaw massacre, exorcist, childsplay, dracula etc are predictable and corny

I've got over 100 old horror films on DVD.

New York Ripper
Cannibal Appocalypse
Zombie Flesh Eaters
Dawn of The dead
Demons etc.

New horror films are pretty poor.

I have a load of old B&W Bela Lugosi films on DVD and consider them (even though most are 60+ years old) some of the best films around.

TANTIVE:
House Of Wax (sorry but Paris Hilton should stick to porn) has the worst acting ever I agree, I mean even the spoof horrors with their hammy acting seem more serious.

ODDITY:
I agree, although as I say the older dracula movies (pre 60's) are quite good, compared to the modern (and countless) remakes they are unworthy of sharing the name. I do agree with you on Saw (I like the plot twists in it).

FOX/AJAX:
I've seen Cannibal Appocalypse, Zombie Flesh Eaters and Dawn Of The Dead (and the sequel Day Of The Dead) and they are all good movies.

Dude,

A few years back i collected the original releases of the video nasties and was missing about 6 for the full set (beast in Heat, Devil Hunter and some of the other expensive ones) The cover for Driller Killer is just terrible but, cool at the same time. I only have a couple left now but i have scans of most of the on my computer 8)

I think most are now quite cheap to get on ebay and most are available on dvd. Most are pretty awful films i just wanted the original releases!

Anybody else remember the video nasty stir in the 80's?

I'm probably the horror movies geek on this forum. I love the classics of the 80's and even some mid to late 70's. I like slashers mostly. horror has never been a genre known for the acting. look at the slumber party massacre series. but there is one remake that (at least in my eyes) did surpass the original and that is the amityville horror. the original put me to sleep

Horror Flicks

Post by Lion »

I used to like horror flicks then. Now they suck...all re-makes. At least the older ones were original. You know something isn't right when show biss, music, fashion, films, etc. are going backwards instead of forward. I mean, I know this is new for the younger people, but for us older ones, it sucks. Been there, seen it, heard it, wore it, give us something else. :x

It's good to see there are some horror fans in the house. Hey Fox, I like video nasties too. I bought a book about them a few years ago and then started collecting them. I'm not a completist, I don't have all of them, but I've got quite a few. I agree, alot of them are awful, but I did discover some gems amongst them though like The Living Dead At Manchester Morgue and Possession.

I can't believe you mentioned Demons. I love that film.:D Alot of my favourite horror films are Italian, I'm a big Dario Argento fan.

Driller Killer was lame in one sense because the the guy was running through the streets with a drill but no actual power supply to operate it and this was years before cordless drills, lol. Other than that it was good.

One so called video nasty I haven't seen in years is The Burning, for some reason that is one of the horror films I remember most. I seriously need to go IMDB and have a look through all the old horror movies to get an memory refresher on some of the one I saw years ago.

I recetly bought one called cradle of filth, a british made movie. Maybe it is just me but it seemed the gore in it was done more comedic effect than horror effect. Best comedy horrors have to be Return Of The Living Dead (the original not any of the sequels), Evil Dead and Bad Taste. And if anyone has not seen Bad Taste I advise you to borrow a copy it is funny as hell.

return of the living dead is so cool, the tarman rocks! i swear the special effects are so real its scary. evil dead 1 is good 2 is better and 3....well just read the original script compared to the movie and you shall see it could have been better. and bad taste was one hell of a MOVIE!

this topic is good to reminisce over the old days when i used to be into horror, and i completely agree, old beats new any day of the week.

Bad Taste is the best movie ever.
Not really, but it's freaking AMAZING.
