Star Wars the origional trilogy - remastered

Post by prozium »

I thought that this would be an interesting topic since I'm such a Star Wars nerd :D As I think most of you know, the origional trilogy has had a new remastered DVD edition in which a few things were changed. What do you think of it?

I'm kind of stuck 'cause theres some things I like with the remastered cut and some things I don't.

PROS:
-The end music at ROTJ. The old music was terrible, the new music as well the the few added scenes is a big plus.
-ANH. Let's face it, the origional cut of A New Hope hasn't aged particularly well effects-wise and is even a bit cheesy at times. The improved visual and sound effects help the entire movie.
-Overall better sounds and visual effects.

CONS:
- Hayden Christensen as the spirit of Anakin =/
- Jango Fetts voice used for Boba Fett
- the added "dance" scene at jabbas palace. The origional music scene was all ready kind of cheesy, they really didn't need to add a little critter going crazy in the middle of the room.

So what do you think about it?

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.  ;)

Well, If you're into Star Wars & consider yourself a nerd, I hate to think what I am .

The spirit of Anakin as Hayden Christenson doesn't bother me as much now as it did when I first heard they were gonna do it. George Lucas has stated that Anakin comes back as he was the last time he was good, before turning to the dark side, so I guess this makes sense. The only real thing I don't like about it is the disservice done to Sabatian Shaw, the original actor to portray the spirit of Anakin. It's almost like George waited until he died to cut him out of the film :?.

I also don't mind the changing of Boba's voice. It maintains continuity with the theme that he is a clone of Jango.

Other thoughts:

FINALLY, the REAL emperor in The Empire Strikes back instead of the monkey eye woman. I also like the subtle changes in the dialogue between Vader & the Emperor. It shows the rift developing between the two and that Vader is finally realizing that Palpatine has been lieing to him about killing Padme & his unborn son.

Like the fact that Naboo was added to the end celebration, but did we really need to hear Jar Jar screaming in the background "WEESA FREE".

I understand that Anakin was supposed to come back as the last time he was good, but he was good when he saved Luke from the emperor as well, that was the REAL last time he was good. I guess it could eb the ast time he was good before he turned but I would have prefered Sebastian Shaw because Hayden is like younger than Luke when it was made so it just plain looks weird in my opinion.

Good point about the continuity about Jango, I guess it's a personal voice preference though ;) I always thought the origional Fett sounded cooler. "He's no good to me dead." :D

Totally agree about the emperor and his and vaders dialogue.

Yeah I agree with you on another point, I like the added end celebration but Jar jar felt so forced in´there and I don't like him anyway!

One thing I really don't like about the new edition though is the whole Solo-Greedo thing. The fact that Han shot first only added to his character being badass and renegade and as he says "only in it for the money". Making Greedo shoot first just to make Solo more of a good guy kind of ruins Hans whole character as well as the "turn" to more of a good guy when he comes and helps Luke at the end of ANH.

Nice to have a fellow nerd to chat with Marlboroprojects :D

Well, Greedo's been shooting first since the first "Special Edition" was released in 1997, so I don't even pay attention to it anymore. The worst part about the whole thing is not even the "watering down" of Han, it's that the whole effect just looks awful.

I'm looking foward to the re release of all six movies in theaters in 3-D. Lucas has supposed to have developed a new 3D technology that doesn't require you to wear glasses (I think they are going to use the same effect in Superman Returns for Imax). This should be friggin' awesome.

Then of course we will have the "Ultimate" box set of all 6 movies, with more changes promised by Lucas.

I was okay with most of the changes, except for Luke's wierd yell as he falls off of the ledge in Empire Strikes Back. I still haven't forgiven Lucas for having Greedo shoot first.

I did like how the hallway that Han runs from is full of hundreds of troopers, and the additions to the space battle were cool. That singing scene was too ridiculous though. Just a way to test CGi and put in some stock footage. Bleh.

I can only wish that in the super demigod 6-pack, with the power of BluRay he could fit both the original versions and the newer ones in the same set. But rumpr has it he destroyed his original reels when he shifted mediums.

I'm still iffy about the alleged "Vader's Return to Coruscant" scene that will be added to A New Hope.

I haven't heard of that, what's that all about?

It'll be nice to see the 6pack collection, gonne be on my list for sure!

I don't like the extra scene in A New Hope where Solo confronts Jabba, mainly 'cause Jabba looks terrible in CGI. He looks small and bright, nothing like the vile, disgusting crime lord we all know and love.

Couple of things,

The alleged Vader returns to Coruscant scene is just that - alleged. This was never planned, filmed, or even considered by Lucas. I remenber when some fanboy started this rumor a few years ago on a SW message board. This comes from the same source that claimed "the spirit of Padme was gonna be added to ROTJ", so you can see how reliable that is.

As far as the "original" versions of the OT, Lucas has said many times that as far as he's concerned they no longer exist. Best advice if you really want them is to pick up the VSH or (better) laserdiscs on Ebay.

I have the original 70s and 80s tapes, plus the 1995 (i think it was that year) remastered versions (those were the ones that didn't have all of the new changes).

My techie friend said the word on the street is that they're putting the original versions on a 2 disc dvd set...or something.

Oh man that South Park episode really rings true now...

Actually, Rem, you are right and I stand corrected.
http://www.starwars.com/episode-iv/rele ... 60503.html

I really never thought Lucas would cave in to the fans demands for the originals on dvd. He has been very adamant even to the point of getting snippy with people that he made these movies the way he wants them to be shown, and the original versions didn't exist in his mind.

Oh well, I guess the almighty dollar is stronger than his principals. The only bad thing though is that these are gonna be a straight transfer from the laser disc versions, no remastering or anything, so the quality will be very 1993ish.  :?
