Vermin76- yeah a cool flick. There were lots of minor budget sci-fi movies from the 50s that were decent. Problem with horror is we've seen it all before. We start watching a movie and get the catch right away- oh, zombies- Ok vampires- yeah, can't be killed demon like in Halloween, and so on. Even when there's a twist it only grabs you for a little while.

Friday the Thirteenth was my favorite horror series up to #3. After that, blagh. Because #3 was the last one that boiled down to Jason and the Girl one against one. Freddy always had too much comic relief for me. Michael Myers 1-2 were also pretty awesome for me. I think with horror, timing is everything. It all depends on how old you are at the time. If the planets are lined up right, you can be scared out of your mind. But if your at a cynical, know it all age, like I was for Scream, you'll miss the point and not be scared at all.

Lots of horror movies out in the coming weeks it seems.
The Gathering
Pulse
Final Destination 3 - yay another sequel, but the premise of the roller coaster should be cool. I know they wanted to do that for FD 2.
When A Stranger Calls - remake
The Hills Have Eyes - remake. The trailer looked pretty good though.
Hostel
Stay Alive
The Devil's Den

Wolf Creek -
OK, I saw this flick last night, & I'll give my impressions. Gonzo, I don't know if you saw it yet, but if not here's what I think.
The movie takes a loooooong time to get going in the sense of a horror/thriller/suspense movie. Actually, for well over an hour it's more of a buddy movie in a sense between the guy & 2 girls. Also, alot of people in the audience I saw it with were kinda put off by all the Aussie lingo & some of the dialogue is hard to understand with the accents (especially the killer when he's talking fast.)
I must say, the long setup does make you start to care about the 3 of them and want them to survive, unlike some horror movies where your actually rooting for them to get killed. I also liked the way they were taken captive without really knowing it until it was too late, instead of just BAM as soon as they get to the killer's place. I won't spoil how he does this, but we do learn his usual method of operation when one of the 3 stumble upon some video cameras stolen from his previous victims.
It was also surprising who actually survived and got away. It was almost as if everything at the end was set up to happen in the exact opposite way as you expect it. I'll also say that although the violence is brief and takes a long time coming, when it comes it comes full force. This guy clearly is not playing with a full deck and takes great pleasure in torturing his victims both physically and mentally.
I'd say it's worth a watch. There are worse movies out there you could spend your money on.

Yeah emmisary when they do a 2 or even 3 sequal it can be good but after that the flicks become cartoons of themselves and somebody is just banking on the original movie's name. Hmm? Kinda like Warriors 2006?

Tantive, are you hiding some bad movie fetish from us?

I haven't had a chance to see any new horror movies lately, it's too expensive and I'm too poor to take a chance on something being crappy. I do like renting the classics though, my personal fav is The Night Walker simply because Barbara Stanwyck is such a great screamer and they put that preview at the beginning showing people under hypnosis talking about their dreams trying to make the movie seem more scary. Barbara Stanwyck was also in Sorry, Wrong Number, another favorite of mine, but I like the radio version better.
I don't really like any of the new horror movies coming out lately, especially the remakes. They try to make the new ones more bloody and slasher than they need to be, a good psychological scare is better than flying blood any day.
I'm on the lookout for the Queen of Blood (from 1966) to watch this new years eve!

I think CGI has ruined modern horror movies to a large extent. It's like these films become too dependent on fake effects to try and make up for a lame story.
Case in point...look at the film "The Thing." I'm talking about the 1980's Kurt Russell one. Even though it was a remake of a fifties movie, it was very imaginatively done. And the special effects...holy shite. Virtually zero computer effects. All the creatures and blood and goo was hand crafted. You couldn't make a movie like that today. If it was made today, the monster would be a CGI piece of crap which wouldn't fool anybody. I really wish someone in Hollywood would have the balls to make a good, gory horror film with no CGI, just hand made effects and a great story.

HOSTEL -
Ok, saw this the other day, so I'll let you know what I thought for anyone who didn't see it yet.
First off, just like Wolf Creek, the movie starts off as a buddy movie for like the first hour (I guess that's the new trend ) However, these buddies are out for one thing and one thing only. I really have to wonder how they escaped the NC-17 rating, cause there are some pretty explicit sex scenes, full frontal female nudity, ect.
) However, these buddies are out for one thing and one thing only. I really have to wonder how they escaped the NC-17 rating, cause there are some pretty explicit sex scenes, full frontal female nudity, ect.
Anywhooo............. the story goes that after a night of whoring & partying in Amsterdam, the 3 buddies miss curfew at their Hostel & get locked out. Some wierd guy takes them in and lets them crash in his pad, and proceeds to show them pictures of hot girls having threesomes with him at a Hostel in Bratislava. So naturaly, the guys are off in search of the poontang on the very next train.
When they arrive at the Hostel, it seems they have found the only place on Earth where every single woman wants to have sex with you before she even tells you her name. Of course this is all a set up, cause there's a company (which by the way, in a move that wrecks the whole movie in my eyes, we are supposed to believe that the entire country is in on it) that will sell you a human being to do whatever you please - rape, torture, kill, anything.
At this point the movie gets rather disturbing. I can't say that the movie is scary at all, but it is disturbing, and the scenes of torture, while brief, are very graphic & very gruesome.
The buddies start to not make it back from partying one by one, until the last one gets suspicious and goes looking for them. By the time he starts to figure out whats going on it's too late.
I can't say I didn't like this movie, but I also can't say that it is the "must see" that all the hype is proclaiming. If you can wait till it comes out on dvd, you're better off renting it, so at least you won't blow 10 bucks if you don't like it.
