I just watched Xanadu pretty recently, and I found that it wasn't that bad. I like Michael Beck as an actor, Gene Kelly was great, and I liked (most of) the music. It seems to get a pretty bad rap, but I liked it all right. Any thoughts?

Well for the time it was made it was popular, especially with the roller skating craze, plus with the popularity of the musical Grease and Olivia Newton-John it was another movie made to capitalize on that certain genre. I also think it was part of disco music's last ditch effort before being runover by punk.

I never cared for any of it much when it was first released, except MB-(I think it wasn't close enough to Swan for me to get crazy about LOL)-but a few years ago, I watched it again, and really enjoyed it, so then I got the tape, and when the dvd came out, just like with the Warriors--I had to have it too.
AND the DVD is MUCH more fun to watch than the tape or tv. MUCH BETTER.

I got to see one of Olivia's very first US live concerts--she came to my college, and was really really good.

Well it is one of those either you get it and you like it or you don't get it and you absolutely can't stand it. LOL

Both Michael and Olivia, and their agents were hoping that the audiences would come and this would spring board both of their careers upwards.

Only the critics panned it, and some people didn't like the fantasy, and some didn't like the animation sequences---and some people absolutely LOVED everything about it. SO no one's career got springboarded, and neither of the actors got into anything very meaty roles after it, until MB went into television with Houston Knights.

BUT Michael Beck did say that when you make friends you still talk to after 25 years and you still have fans coming up and telling you what the movie meant to them, and how much they loved it---being part of something that people still remember and want to talk about 25 years later is a very positive thing.
And he does not regret making the movie.

Sort of like the Warriors--Xanadu still has a large cult type following of people who know the dialogs, songs, and still will rollerskate to the soundtrack, and some even are still dancing in their living rooms.

Well I confess, I have never seen it.  I just want to leave Michael with his Swan character in my head.
