Remake Of The Outsiders
Well, not exactly a remake, but a refreshing, according to director Francis Ford Coppola. From Today's NY Post:
EVERYTHING OLD is new again ? and often better. Take Francis Ford Coppola's famous 1983 coming-of-age film, "The Outsiders." This is based on the S.E. Hinton novel that is still the No. 1 novel taught in public schools.
The movie featured a hot ensemble of future stars, including Tom Cruise, Diane Lane, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell and Leif Garrett. Director Coppola is coming out with a refreshed version of his original cut ? a new beginning, a new ending, a new score. It is, says Francis, more faithful to Hinton's novel.
"The Outsiders" will have a limited theatrical release in early September. By the end of that month, the revamped version will be available on DVD.
It will be interesting to see what Coppola has done in reworking a movie already considered seminal. And it is a blast watching these young actors before fame hit them upside the head.
This has the potential to be very good. This is not some hack screwing around with a classic, but the original director. I'm pretty sure any new footage was already shot when the movie was made since none of the original actors could pass for what they looked like 22 years ago.
Now, I'm not really sure cause it's been so long since I saw this movie, but doesn't the original begin & end with Ponyboy Curtis (C.Thomas Howell) writing a report for school about the events that take place in the movie?
I also don't remember how the book started & ended (Though I think it started with Ponyboy coming out of a movie theater & getting jumped by the Soc's & the rest of the gang comes & saves him). If anyone knows please post it.

Yes, it starts and sort of ends with Ponyboy doing his school report.
The start(book) of his report(all you see(movie) is a shot of his paper/pen in moviewith his voice narration) is his walking out of the theater with "only two things on his mind"then he gets jumped, , right up to where he calls his teacher and asks how long it can be and he starts writing and that is the end.
'
I always thought that with only a few exceptions---that movie actually did stay pretty close to the book. Much closer than the Warrriors did.
I wonder how they will change it for a different end---don't really see the options there, either in the movie or in the book. I have both and watched it not too long ago. But will watch it again, sometime soon, just to double check my memory.

So then you're saying the book & movie both start & end with the school report????? If so I agree, I don't know how much more accurate they can make the movie. It seemed to be pretty much dead on for a book to movie conversion. A lot more accurate than Rumble Fish. The start(book) of his report(all you see(movie) is a shot of his paper/pen in moviewith his voice narration) is his walking out of the theater with "only two things on his mind"then he gets jumped, , right up to where he calls his teacher and asks how long it can be and he starts writing and that is the end.
It will be cool to see it on the big screen 22 years later with a new print, a new score, and whatever little changes they make.
God I wish Walter Hill would do that with The Warriors.

I don't see Tom Cruise getting too much out of this. He's not even one of the major players as the movie mainly revolves around C.Thomas Howell, Ralph Machio, & Matt Dillon. Even Patrick Swayze has a bigger role than him.

I will try to watch it again in the next few days and double check the movie beginning---and the book beginning just to make sure--as I get alittle older my memory isn't what it used to be!! LOL
YES--that is true, tho there was alittle more for the Steve character in the book, than they showed in the movie---and it seems to me while reading about it--they made a comment that alot of TC's Steve ended up on the edit floor---and if they saved those prints of film---there may a lot more that they could put back into the movie than the film we saw!! That is a definate possibility---and if they had that for the Steve character, there probably is more for most of them.
Patrick Sw. SIGH==he isn't Michael Beck, but there was a time watching both the OUTSIDERS and RED DAWN, he did good things!! He sort of lost me after awhile though--

I think Tom C's last couple of films have been great and i also think he's an under rated actor! No i don't fancy him.

COULD have been an incredible movie. story stayed the same, which was rare, the only problem was the acting. let's be honest, most of the cast are accomplished actors NOW! but , come on!! every time i hear ralph maccio, machio, (whatever!) LOL say "mustang's, they're tuff!" LOLOL i almost wet myself!! i laugh so hard!!! the only one who could act at the time, was matt dillon.

Outsiders - The Complete Novel
Just to let Ranchgal & everyone know, this movie is now playing in a limited theatrical release until Sept. 15 at the AMC Times Square. I'm gonna catch the 10:45 show, so tmow I'll let you all know how it was. From what I'm hearing from people who saw it, they say the changes are awesome.
The beginning is supposedly completely different, the story now flows exactly like the book, they said there was lots more Tom Cruise & Rob Lowe, and the new rock & roll soundtrack kicks.
I'll keep you posted. ;

Remake Of The Outsiders
Well all righty then, here's my review. First off I have to say that the new picture and sound quality are just awesome. The movie was shown in digital projection and looked just stunning. A far cry from the last time I saw it in theaters.
Now for the changes. Keep in mind it's been about 20 years since I saw this movie, so I'm really just going by what I remember. Maybe someone who has the movie like RanchGal can confirm that these are actual added scenes and not the onset of senility on my part. 8)
The Beginning - Well, the beginning was new. Unfortunately it wasn't a scene, just various still shots of the Greasers set against a golden sky while Stevie Wonder's "Stay Gold" played in the background and the credits were listed. (according to gang affiliation - Greaser, Soc, ect.)
There seemed like there was some new footage added after the gang rescues Ponyboy from the Soc's. It really seemed to be exactly like the book and I don't remember it being that close originally.
There was a long (actually kind of disturbing) scene added with Rob Lowe and C. Thomas Howell in bed (yes they sleep in the same bed) talking about Sodapop getting married, but he's gonna wait until Pony is in college so he can help out with the bills. Then the scene gets really creepy as Soda & Pony are holding each other (in bed) and Pony is asking Soda What it's like to be in love.
There was a scene where 2 bit comes over before Pony, Johnny, & Dallas goe to the movies where he's drinking beer and eating a HUGE chocolate cake (for breakfast) that I don't remember. Ranchgal?
There was a gratuitous shot of Rob Lowe coming out of the shower while he's getting ready for work. (calm down female warriors, he's wearing a towel
)
After 2 bit and Pony leave Johnny's room in the Hospital, there was a scene I don't remember where they confront Johnny's mother in the hallway. 2 bit calls her a drunk and tells her to go straight to hell.
The Ending - Now, here is where most of the changes were. After Johnny and Dallas die, we see scenes from Pony's trial, with people like Cherry testifying for him. He is found not guilty and released to the guardianship of his brother Darryl. We then see Pony walking up to his school. He sees Cherry and smiles at her but she just turns her back on him and walks away with her friends. Then his teacher approaches and tells him that he is failing but due to the circumstances he will pass him if Pony writes a good term paper.
Then we cut to a scene of the 3 brothers sitting at the table and Darryl is yelling at Pony about his schoolwork and Soda runs out of the house. They chase him down and we are treated to another 10 minute scene of men laying on the ground hugging each other.
The Soundtrack - the new music features alot of surfer style music like "wipeout" (think of the deleted scene where the Warriors are walking down to the boardwalk), and minor 60's tracks. In some places (like the rumble) I think the original worked better.
Well thats all I can think of for now.

YEs the Twobit/chocolate cake, and the Sodapop/"towel " were both in the original.
ABout the bedroom---that was in the book too--I never got any feeling about it, but then I shared room with 1 brother for awhile as young kids, and 2 sisters most of my life, so one bed, two beds--whatever, doesn't mean anything back then, just the way it goes when there isn't much room---think about this--IF their parents were still alive, Darry would have been with them there too, unless he would have gotten to go to college. But when you think about kids that age, who don't have any parents--and no one to give them stability but themselves--no wonder they cling to each other---good thing they have someone to cling too-it would be awful being that age and all alone.
I may have to watch again, as I don't remember the school scenes at all---and I can't wait to see that!! I always wondered if Cherry wasn't more act than substance. Even though she told him she probably wouldn't talk to him, and NOT to take it personally- that is such a crock!!
I am up in the air as to the scene of the brothers chasing Soda, I can remember it from the book, but don't get the vision from the movie, one more thing to check!! LOL
Sounds good. I will be waiting to see it---I hope it gets this far to the middle!!
