CHAPTER SIX

Chapter 6

The sun was beginning to descend by the time Jax had made it back to Coney. He stepped off the train and looked around. The place looked the same since the last time he saw it. One week in the hospital recovering. They wouldn?t let him out any sooner no matter how often he said he was okay. He made his way down the stairs to the street. He looked around, there were no Destroyers in sight. It was no matter, he survived their assault once, he would do it again. He just had to stay focus in the middle of the fight.

He started down the street, half expecting to get jumped. He was surprised there was nobody around the subway to watch and see when he returned. Of course, why would they. It made sense. They knew where he would be and they weren?t stupid enough to hit the man right when he gets back, would look too suspicious. Jax smiled to himself. Maybe they were getting smarter. Jax doubted it but stranger things could happen. Like that nurse back there. She was a sweet peach, maybe a little too upper class. But, there was something about her. HE could tell she liked the wilder side of life. And that?s exactly what Jax was, on the wilder dirtier side of life. Maybe, he would show her how to get dirty. He smiled, then pushed the thought away. In his day dreaming he had walked down an alley. It was a quick route he always used to get to the store faster. He always used it, of course he wasn?t wanted dead then. He looked around, he could feel them. Not many, two maybe three. Damn, why didn?t he stay focused? Gotten all caught up by that rich girl. Now he was in a small space, with no one around. He kept walking, pretended not to notice he was being followed. HE led them to apart of an alley he knew they would show themselves in. It was a dead end, for whom? Well Jax knew who they thought was dead; he was going to enjoy showing them how wrong they were.
?Dead end, not smart when you being followed.? The voice was deep and forceful. It commanded obedience. It exuded authority. It also, came from behind him.
?Dead end, maybe. But not for me.? He turned ready to fight, his fist clenched. He was in the middle of throwing a punch when he stopped in mid stride. The man who was talking wasn?t a Destroyer. He didn?t dress like a Destroyer, he had a leather vest rather than a denim jacket for one. For another clue, his eyes were clear; there was no trace of any drug haze. The man who stood in front of him was tall; taller than Jax at least. His dark skin contrasted with the dirty red leather of his vest. The only other thing of interest about him was his headpiece. It was beige with some sort of pattern that Jax couldn?t figure out. They stared at each other for a second neither saying anything.
Jax hated to admit it, but the man impressed him. He stood still, completely still. That wasn?t as important as the fact that he never took his eyes off Jax. He looked Jax dead in the eye and never flinched. Jax respected that. He saw movement from behind the man standing in front of him. He didn?t move his eyes away from the stare of the dark man in front of him.
?I told you Cleon. He?s solid. Grew up with him, never was a tougher fighter.?
Jax recognized the voice.
?Wyatt??
?Jax.?
?Wyatt, you son of a bitch. How you been??
?Been getting along. Apart of a group now.?
?Oh yeah, who.? He asked, noticing the vest on Wyatt for the first time.
The one called Cleon spoke. ?We call ourselves the Warriors. We run Coney.?
Jax looked at the man in the headpiece skeptically. ?Oh yeah. You sure the Destroyers know that. They seem to think they own Coney.?
?They got East Coney?.but not for much longer. Heard you took some of ?em out.?
?Yeah. So what??
?Well, if you took out as many as they say, single handedly. We?d like you with us.?
Jax stared at him for another minute. ?No thanks. Not my style.?
?You sure ?bout that. Word on the street is the Destroyers got you all ready for a toe tag. Only way out is to have a crew to back you up.?
?Look, I ain?t one to take commands. And the last thing I need is to be listening to some guy in a rag telling what I can and can?t do. Besides, I don?t need a crew. These wimps want me they can try all they want to. The fact is these faggots ain?t got the guts to take me on.
Cleon smiled. ?You sure about that, huh. Well Jax I hope you right. ?Cause if you ain?t, you gonna be dead ?inna week. Let?s go Warriors.?
?After awhile Jax.? Wyatt said with a grim look on his face.
?Don?t be a stranger Wyatt.?
?It ain?t Wyatt.?
?No, what is it??
? They call me Cowboy now.?
Jax looked up and saw the Stetson on the young man?s head. He smiled.
?Cowboy, huh? It suits ya. Well, don?t be a stranger cowboy.?
He looked at the other one as he was leaving.
?Hey? Cleon was it.?
The man in the headpiece turned around. The man had something in his eyes. Jax knew that him saying the Destroyers wouldn?t be around much longer wasn?t a boast. This guy was certain and Jax had a feeling that the Destroyers days were numbered.
He spoke. ?Yeah.?
?Nice headpiece.?
The Warrior smiled at this. ?Stay safe Jax. Hope to see you around.?
All the way back to the store Jax was running the offer through his head. Maybe it wasn?t such a bad idea. He could use the help. And no matter what, the numbers of the Destroyers were going to be a problem. However, if he started running with the Warriors he couldn?t be in East Coney anymore. And without him there, Mr. Wright was good and screwed. The man was a chickenshit, but he was kinder to Jax than anybody else ever was. He was still thinking the offer over when he arrived at the store. It stood like before but this time, there was something different. This time Mr. Wright?s Hardware store that had served the community of East Coney for 25 years was on fire. Jax stared through the flames and smoke. He couldn?t believe the entire store was engulfed in flame. He hid is eyes from the sting of the fire, he coughed the smoke out of his lungs. He saw an opening in the flame. In the opening he saw two bodies.
He knew who they were. He had taken too long to get there. A week in the hospital, followed by half a day in the Police department answering questions. The Destroyers weren?t waiting for him at the train station because they were too busy killing and burning the Wright?s. He only hoped they were dead before the fire. Off in the distance he heard them. The sirens announcing that the Cops and Fire Department would be arriving just short of too late.
He didn?t know why, but he took off. He ran away to keep from having to answer questions. At least, that?s what he was telling himself. He darted into a back alley, he looked behind him and saw the rush of a fire engine on it?s way to the store. He took a right behind a building and right into a mass of Destroyers. They weren?t smart after all, they were going to make a clean sweep and leave a calling card on what happens to those who defies them.
The leader, stared at him a ugly grin revealing yellow teeth. He pointed a long, meaty, black finger at Jax.
?Face it baby, you good and screwed. You have anything left to say boy.?
?Yeah.? Jax said no a hint of fear in his voice. ?What took you faggots, so long.?
The leaders face darkened. He looked at his soldiers and smiled. He simply said
?Get him.?
