Truth be told I can't stand the mainstream rap we see on MTV every 10 minutes and that play on reapeat on the radio stations.

When it comes to rap, I like more thoughtfull, intelligent stuff that just "bitches and hoes, being a gangsta, bling bling, pimpin' etc.

That's why I like Atmosphere (one of my favorite artists in general). Beastie Boys, Insane Clown Posse, Jedi Mind Tricks, Tonedeff and Redrama.

wait wait wait wait

your really gonna put Insane CLown Posse in a list of people you list off after saying "I like more thoughtfull, intelligent stuff"

are you kidding?

icp is intelligent but Nas isnt? Papoose isnt? and the fago drinking chinken head cutting clown makup wearing guys are?

So true KARTOON. Also it an't always about bitches, hoes and bling bling ever thought that some rappers talk about personal stuff like Kanye or 50 cent. Some of them had a tough road becoming a succeful rapper. :doubt:

One thing that seems to transcend different types of music is the appeal of originality.  A lot of rock bands in the eighties were accused of trying to emulate Led Zeppelin or Aerosmith.  Rappers who come up with a new style are really popular.  I think Das EFX had this, but more than anyone, was NWA.  Before them, in the East anyway, things were very different in the Rap world.

so true, pre nwa (and smaller groups that get left out in the coming of gangster rap) hiphop was more culture and a fun thing, people liked rap beacuse it was fun. you could walk down the street and a kid would be beat boxing on the street and another kid rapping and people didnt mind beacuse they wernt gonna rob you right after. NWA and the west brought a invasion in that changed alot to do with it. people give will smith a hard time, but i love his records beacuse he picked to stay to hiphop and make fun records....thats what they ALL were like in the day. fun, stuff you could have fun to...people say blah hes pop and this and that but they all were pre NWA. will smith never even swore on a record untill his latest effort. and he even bleeped that out. and he was so emotional over the subject. his song about 9/11 makes you wanna just stand a yell.

with everything, music will change. every year a new thing it rap starts up and one guy starts it and the rest are biting it

OK granted ICP may aren't an example of intelligent rap but they're definately one of the more alternative acts. I've never heard of papoose and I've only know of nas so I didn't exactly bring them down.

@Furies4life:
Kanye West is rather good but if you can't seriously say that 50 cent isn't full of himself and that most of his songs and videos blend togeather in terms of content.

Im not a huge hip hop fan but i'd say Big Daddy Kane in his prime wrote really good rhymes and
T La Rock was ahead of his time as well.

I been into rap for a while, my friend got me into rap and i've loved it ever since.
So here is my list: Tupac, Akon, Notorious B.I.G., Bone Thugs N Harmony, Kanye West, Twista, Ludacris, Nas, Pretty Ricky, T Pain, Trey Songz, B2K, Jim Jones and Fatman Scoop there are more but those are the ones I thought of.

like toon said before, pre-nwa stuff is reallly fun to listen to.

Kurtis Blow = very fun to 'break it down' to
Fresh Prince= makes you wanna dance
Slick Rick= tells stories which is a treat for the ear
Sugarhill Gang= Apache and Rappers Delight are amazing.

I also collect trading cards released by "Yo! MTV Raps" they are just trading cards with old school rappers on them. Very Cool!!
