The Warriors invented Double Dragon???

Post by saner »

Well not invented but quite possibly inspired many beat 'em up games that were created years later.

I mean I can't help but notice a slight relation between Swan and Ajax in comparison with Billy and Jimmy Lee. Or the Lindas from Double Dragon kind of having the hairstyle and lethal aggressiveness like some of the Lizzies do? or the fact the Ropars wear overalls like the Punks?

Also the way games like Double Dragon had categories of different enemy types, you would think those clones are gangs within gangs.
as in, each enemy type you see frequently share an identical dress or color code (just like in The Warriors, each gang has colors and style of clothing they all share to represent their crew.)

also in other games, like in Streets of Rage, seems to show the police perspective of things. as well as Mr. X having done what Cyrus wanted to do, uniting several gangs into one whole and taking over the city.

or notice in many brawler games, many of those games share an often used location: the subway.

these similiarities just made me think about this. How the movie has made an impact on the videogame industry.

:D

How could you forget Renegade?
CLASSIC GAME

Start's in a subway.
Female gang.
Gang's in general.
i'm sure the main character wore a Warriors outfit aswell, minus the logo, couldnt really say about colour, as i remember it being Yellow & black on the spectrum :P

Image

Hmm...it would appear that on the Master System version, his outfit was yellow. But the similarities are there!

Yeah, Renegade was pretty bad. Hard to believe it lead into River City Ransom, almost. But I do seem to remember that one of the characters at least wore a Warriors-like uniform.

now, I vaguely remember seeing a Cochise lookalike in some beat-em-up or fighter, probably on arcade, probably sucked too. I'll try to look it up sometime.

to be fair, the ZX Spectrum did have some games that were actually pretty fun to me, despite how outdated they were by the time I found out about it's existence.

Okay, I'm in serious need of help right now, I'm about to go crazy, dudes. I know I have seen lookalikes of Cleon, Ajax, and Cochise in games, probably arcade, but I can't remember for the life of me where any of them came from.

Ajax definitely reminds me of Jimmy Lee from double dragon.

And Swan looks like Billy Lee.

back then, Billy was the blonde and Jimmy was the one with brown hair.

Marian was also similiar to Mercy in dress style.

Willy had a gun like Luther did.

as for Cleon. I dont know. maybe you are thinking Streets of Rage's Adam Hunter. or Combatribes' third player character.

Cochise. I dont remember any brawler character with a afro like that. and if he was, he definitely wasn't wearing a Warriors-type vest.

also notice in Double Dragon the infamous weapons

the baseball bat (Furies), dynamite (kinda like the molotov cocktail The Warriors used and the explosion they set up), the knife (that Swan threw)

also notice how in games like Streets of Rage 2 or 3, there were parts where you had to destroy an obstacle or wall to proceed. that's very similiar to the beginning of The Warriors movie when Ajax and the others punched that boarded up spot to get through and escape.

Even though that's likely, another thing you have to take into account, is if you look at the original plot and old art style, it's heavily inspired by the highly influential manga series "Fist of the North Star".

If Double Dragon took the "main villain is a coward with a gun" thing from the Warriors, though, then they've spawned a huuuge legacy of the Warriors, whether or not people realize it.

I mean, every beat-em-up that wanted to be awesome had a gunman or little twerp or somebody, not even if they were a final boss, but usually... let's see...

Double Dragon
Final Fight (actually, it was a crossbow, but there was a crooked cop with a gun)
Streets of Rage 1 and 2 (in 3, Mr. X was a brain in a robot body)
Vendetta (okay, not big name, but it was a pretty fun game)
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (He wasn't the final boss, but one of the bosses was a short little twerp with a gun)

and there's plenty more.

also in Renegade, the subway boss looks a hell of a lot like Cyrus.

Check out "The Combatribes" by Technos (The same company that made Double Dragon and Renegade, they all wear the same clothes that look like the Warriors 'cept different colors. Different gangs in every level, the Motorcycle Nuclear Warheads, the Stadium Barbarians and the Slaughter Troops (And the slash skate screamers of level 3 remind me of the Furies 'cept only they play hockey) and yes, the game takes place in New York. And if I wasn't mistaken, the second level takes place in Coney Island.

Try it out on MAME (But for legal reasons, I can't tell you where) it's a blast!

I've been trying to remember the name of that game for months! Thanks!

Edit:

I'd really be surprised if that game wasn't influenced by The Warriors. I especially loved the roller-skating gang (sound familiar?). The only gang-related disappointment, for me, was the "Stadium Barbarians," because although the level's set in a baseball stadium, the gang itself has little to do with baseball; however, this is possibly more proof that the developers were aware of the movie and avoided using baseball outfits to avoid a potential lawsuit. The Indian War Chief boss at the end of the stage was a nice touch, though.
