This is an issue that annoys me greatly, and sadly I have had to have this conversation many times.
The original skinhead movement had nothing to do with any white power bullshit. The original skinhead movement was all about reggae. The working class youth in Britain had become alienated from the sixties hippy movement because the majority of hippies were bored rich kids. It is all very well preaching peace and love and not working for the 'man', but if you are from a poor family and your prospects are bleak you sometimes have to work jobs that you don't want to do and sometimes work for people that you hate. The working class youth felt angry about this alienation and formed their own movement based around the influx of reggae that the Jamaican immigrants of the sixties brought with them when they moved to Britain. The image came about because as stated the skinhead movement was a reaction against the hippy movement and shaved heads and boots is as far from long hair and sandals as you can get. Also as they were poor there was a financial aspect, shaving your own head is cheaper than going to the barbers and a good pair of Doc Martens will last you a few years. Later on the skinhead scene merged with the punk scene which was also a reaction against the hippy movement and which also took heavy influences from Reggae music (The Clash is the best example). The myth that skinheads are nazis came about when in the seventies right-wing groups began to recruit working class people (essentially the working class were tricked and exploited by the right). Over time because the skinhead scene was seen as a working class movement people began to associate skinheads with the right-wing (tv and films made the problem worse). The nazis basically stole our image.
In short, real skinheads such as myself are not racist as our scene comes partly from Jamaican music and culture. This is why The Warriors is my favourite film as it shows a real skinhead gang, black and white working class united (and yes, there are black skinheads).
