this could have went in the Bazaar section but is also suitable for here. plus this section hasn't receivind any attention recently.

here is a copy of the first edition  book from 1966 on ebay

Seriously though, as a general rule of thumb, hardbacks are released before softcovers.  The softcover has a recommendation emblazoned on the front cover which leads me to believe it had been released in some other form before it.
