SOL YURICKS BOOK

Post by Marlboroprojects »

Well, I finished the book and will give my impressions.

First, from where I left off......Ranchgal is right. Not only aren't the Dominators blamed for killing Ishmail, no one is. After the Gang escaped the meeting I don't think Ishmail is ever mentioned again. So, the Dominators are not being hunted by every gang like the Warriors were. They're not being hunted at all.

Now for those that are wondering if they should buy the book or not...........if you are only a fan of the movie itself and otherwise have no interest in gang related fiction, or if you are expecting the book to follow line for line with the movie, I say save your money.

If however you are interested in gangs in general and like movies such as West side Story and The Wanderers in addition to the warriors I say give it a try. Just DON'T expect it to be a novelization of the movie. If that is what you are after I say you should try to get a copy of the script online.

Some loose observations:

For a book about gangs, there is hardly any gang warfare. Except for the riot that breaks out at the meeting, you never see two gangs get it on.

It seems after reading the whole book that contrary to initial thoughts on who is based on who in the movie, I've come to the conclusion that some characters in the book were combined to make 1 character in the movie.
For example, Hinton's introduction in the book as being the artist who is told to "hit everything in site", and his early attitudes made be initially believe he became Rembrandt in the movie. However as the book progresses, you can clearly see by his actions (he's the one who travels through the subway tunnel alone) and changing attitude that Swan is based very heavily on his character. (along with Hector)

What Sol Yurick lacks in writing about gang warfare, he certainly makes up for in graphic sex sequences. We are "treated" to the gang rape of the Mercy character, the attempted gang rape of a drunk nurse in central park, Hinton's sex romp with a teen prostitute in the bathroom stall at the Times Square Subway Station, Hinton having a conversation with his mother while she's getting nailed by her boyfriend, and the implied incest between Hinton's brother & sister (sleeping naked in the same bed).

The Dominator's "colors" are a pin that looks like a mercedes emblem that they wear on their hats. No vests here, sorry.

The one scene in the book closest to anything in the movie is when the Dominators get off the train (due to construction not a fire like the movie) and meet up with the low class gang. Other than the name of the gangs, this scene is almost exactly the same as the movie, even some of the dialogue is identical. Unfortunately, the gang never comes after them like the Orphans do after being told to go fuck themselves when the Mercy character demands a pin.

Well, if anyone has any questions about the book, just ask & I'll try my best to answer them :)

SOL YURICKS BOOK

Did you ever get the chance to read or/and see Cross and the Switchblade?
It was alittle earlier than the Warriors, and I do NOT think it was ever released on tape or dvd.
A young Eric Estrada played a main gang member and Pat Boone I think played the preacher--I have the book some place, and it is a much better read and actually based on actual happenings-than the SY book.
Did a paper on the whole scene when I was in college, and used that one and another called Run Baby Run, the Nicky Cruz story--(he was the real life gang member that Eric's character was based on) as a couple of my souces of research.

I enjoyed the feel of both of them, and the movie.

The Wanderers book was also pretty good. Portrayed the characters in a much more real life way than the goofy retards they were made into in the movie.

Also reccomend:

The Outsiders
Rumble Fish

Both SE Hinton books are geared towards a younger reader but still pretty good, and

West Side Story - the movie novelization, not the play that is always published with Romeo & Juliet & West Side Story in the same book. It really fleshes out the story and gives a lot of insight and depth to the characters. Also no singing and dancing.

Woah!
Well i got the book a couple of days ago it arrived.
I ordered it from Amazon.com. I had been looking for it on ebay since the first time I ever saw the movie, however it never shows up on ebay, so I went to the amazon.com link found on this site.

I got the soundtrack too. but that was definately cheaper on ebay!

I'm loving the book. I always prefer to read books AFTER seeing a movie i love. The last 2 books I read were Gone with the Wind, and Interview with the Vampire BECAUSE I love the movies, and after youve seen the movie, when you read the book you are visualising those characters

its like youre learning secrets abou them or something!

well i do find the book hard to follow!

At first I was sure that Lunkface was COWBOY. the reason being that LUnkface is immediately introduced as having a hat that he wears constantly. However lunkface is also aggressive. so its confusing.

I also thought that Junior was REMBRANT because hes the youngest, and gets histerical in the cemetary.
However a reference is made to Hinton being the artist.

I thought that Bimbo was Snow........... tell me if you agree

However there are 7 men and not 9 like the film.

I'm really enjoying the book.
Im glad its different. there would be no point reading it if it was the same.

Having said that the movie is much better and I dont think id enjoy Yuricks other novels!

PS I HAVE A DESPERATELY IMPORTANT QUESTION!

WAS THE WARRIORS A COMIC:?
IF SO I WANT TO BUY IT ALL!

I heard that the comic transitions in the film were reproductions of the original 70s warriors comic!

i have looked on ebay and cant find it. nor anywere else online.
Also where can i track down an original publication of the warriors?

thanks

The comic transitions are frames from the film, but computer filtered to make it look like a comic drawing.  Never heard of a comic book though.
