Well, the book mentions it more than once and it's quite normal to smoke for people in their 20's, above all if you are a member of gang.

i guess thats the perfect answer very simple but a good answer, i guess it improves the "realism"
Yeah, but they WERE doing SOMENTHING: talking, playing Pinball, "Gym"... etc...
So, if it's true what doyle posted (2 posts above: Gang Members "MUST" somehow to Smoke)... it's also true only the "other" Warriors were smoking, "OUR" Warriors weren't... cause they didn't smoke in The Movie, and The Game should be based on The Movie.
I mean, it just was a Rock* Game Creators' choice... not at all a bad one to be honest, but only theirs.
Cause in The Book The 7 Warriors don't smoke. Oh no, cause smoking "That" Cigarette (only 1 per person) in the Novel, "Did Have" a symbolic meaning.

In the book, the gang leaders traded cigarettes and lit them for each other when they met each other at the turf bounderies.  All the gang was ordered to smoke a cigarette when they were hiding in the grave yard.  When the gang is fleeing from the conclave, lunkface tries to light a cigarette, but it gets knocked out of his mouth.  Ajax is mostly based on the lunkface charecter and in the production photo's on this site, theres a picture of ajax holding a cigarette.

Well you say about the whole smoking and being good runners, I get chased all the time and I'm a smoker (trying to quit.. but everyone says that), I still get away from people chasing me (usually for no good reason but because I'm different).

So, somehow, you agree with me... ie, They were not heavy smokers. Well, maybe they had no money for buying cigarettes... but they just weren't.
About that Photo, I cannot find it, why don't you post it here? (Hey, don't misunderstand me, I believe you!!!) ;)
Anyway, I was thinking, maybe James Remar is a smoker... and in that photo they weren't "filming". I mean, as all us know very well, nobody smokes in The Movie. 8)

They could have stolen cigarettes or had them as part payment for protection racket?

Wow, first of all thanks for posting this Great Pic.
Now, your Idea about the Cigarettes: I think it's a Very Good one, maybe the Right Theory.

I have to add that among all The Warriors/Actors, Ajax/James Remar... I mean, if I had bet who was a smoker, I'd have won 1000000 $!!! :D
He is just that kinda Dude!!! Hey, No Offense!!!

Recently re-read the original script.  When swan meets the leader of the orphans, he holds out a packet of cigarettes and offers him one as a peace offering.  Maybe walter hill didnt want to show people smoking in his film for a reason (do any of the lizzies smoke in the film? Cant remember).  You would have thought there would be more gang members lighting up, being is it was made in the less politically correct 70's.

Yeah, just re-seen, they smoke... cigarettes???... I'd just say: "Mary"!!!
Anyway, I forgot about the Original Script... so, Good Point ND!!!
Also to me Walter Hill made a Politically Correct (70's) Choice: Warriors-No Cigarettes.
