The famed Coney Island Boardwalk might soon get a facelift after developer bought chunk of land.

A shopping mall developer has quietly snatched up property along Coney Island's famed Boardwalk - sparking fears that beloved attractions could be replaced by a mall.
Thor Equities has bought property on W. 12th St., where a go-kart track stands, and along the Boardwalk where "Dunk the Creep," a souvenir shop and a gyro stand reside.

The businesses were told to be out by the end of the summer, owners told the Daily News.

"We are looking for a new home," said the manager of the gyro stand, who goes by the name Joey Clams. "Are they going to take us out and replace us with an Applebee's or Olive Garden? Knishes, hot dogs, shish kebab - that's what makes Coney Island."

Other operators also are worried because their landlords have only offered short-term leases with sky-high rent hikes.

Shop owners and landowners said Kings County GOP Chairman Hy Singer, who owns several Coney Island properties, was negotiating with Thor to sell land whose tenants include Nathan's on the Boardwalk and the venerable Ruby's bar.
Singer refused to comment.

A Thor spokesman was tight-lipped about what the developer plans to build, but promised it would revive the area.

This would seriously blow! I'm all for improving and upgrading the nieghborhood, but Coney Island without Nathan's would never be right. Amazing how politicians own all this land. I guess that really helps with the zoning laws, huh? :x :x :x :x :x :x

If they try to "upscale" te Boardwalk at Coney it'll be a freaking crime. Te boardwalk is old school, with all the sloppy eateries and various attractions, not to mention the amusement park right there. Besides, I've never played "Shoot the Freak" yet!

And of course don't TOUCH the Warriors mural LOL.

I was disgusted a few years back when they put a Mcdonalds on the boardwalk.

But seriously, this is the crap that happens in this city in the name of tourism and "revitilization". Those are just fancy words for bullshit. In their quest to do what's "in everybody's best interest" (when the only real interest is in pleasing the lobbyists and lining their own pockets) the politicians never see the overall effect on the working man both trying to make a buck and not wanting to have to spend all of theirs on lunch.

Case in point - look at Times Square. While it's quite admirable  that former mayor Rudy Gulliani took up the crusade to drive out all the peep shows from the area, what about all the legitimate businesses that got caught up in the inquisition.

Call me crazy, but I kind of miss Times Square the way it was. I mis the gamerooms & video arcades. I miss the second run movie theaters (not the porno theaters) where you could watch movies all day if you wanted for just a few bucks. I miss the food counters and the record shops and the novelty stores. I miss Nathans, the biggest one in the world and one of only 3 held by the original owners in Coney Island. I miss Gyro King, where you could get one of the best gyro or shish kebab sandwiches in the city for about 3 bucks.

Now we have Disneyland, with none of the charm or attractions. We have 6.99 burgers at freakin Mcdonalds, we have 4.00 slices of pizza from corporate franchises who couldn't make a real pizza if their lives depended on it, and we have tourist friendly overpriced food chains like Red Lobster and Applebees. We have 10.25 movie tickets.

Sorry for the rant, I guess I was just feeling a little nostalgic.

No apology necessary as I bet a lot of us feel the same way.

The rich just getting richer. Does Bruce Ratner really care about the people of Brooklyn he is kicking out of their homes?

Darn!

I would really suck big time if eventually CI completely disappears. I guess it's just one of those unavoidable realities we must face one day or another.

In reference to Nathan's, isn't that building a real landmark and owned by the Nathan's? I mean, how are the politicians and rich people intending to get rid of it?
