The Warriors' Belt Buckles
Do you guys think there was a meaning behind each of the Warriors' Belt Buckles? We know most of the buckles were pretty big, but I'm wondering if there was some kind of personality giveaways with them. This is what I've put together:
Cleon - I couldn't get a good view of his belt buckle, but it looks like two baubles, but I need a closer look.
Cochise - Left profile of Native American Chief with headdress, bronze. I'm figuring this goes along with his proud Native American gear. Could stand for pride and heritage.
Rembrandt - Pony in gallop, gold. Perhaps this is a symbol of his youth, and his eagerness for the freedom to run with the big boys, or maybe even his desire for freedom, period. I've noticed that Rembrandt always had a bit of a sad look in his eyes, like he was just dying for something more.
Fox - Due to his closed vest, belt buckle was unseen. Even that might mean something deeper. But in an unrelated topic, he was the only Warrior who wore a plain gold necklace, with a cross charm, if memory serves me correctly.
Cowboy - His belt looks to be a standard issue military belt with a silver buckle. Not to really quote the game-- maybe Rockstar noticed this too-- but in one part of the game, when you talk to Cowboy, he quotes that he's just a soldier and doesn't mind taking orders. He was a soldier and a good fighter, didn't complain.
Vermin - He was rocking a regular gold square belt buckle, more or less classic. Maybe he was kind of a square in the sense that he was quite pessimistic about the entire situation, though the gold might symbolize his sense of humor as the way to deal with it.
Ajax - Greek-styled face of a man wearing (helmet) in bronze looking directly out front. Kind of self-explanitory. Ajax was definitely a Warrior in the sense that he was always ready for battle and hated to run. Like the man on the buckle, he would rather look directly into the face of opposition. That really goes with the greek name Ajax, of course...
Swan - The first time I noticed his belt buckle, I called it a pirate belt; kind of a gold swashbuckler thing going on there. Maybe it was a symbol for the gang as a whole, going out raiding the streets for 'gold'-- something better. It's also in the sense that Swan was a classic kind of dude, who seemed to be a closet action junkie, and fearless, though careful. He did seem stiff, but adventurous, nonetheless.
Snow - Heart-shaped belt buckle, the only other silver one. I figured that this meant he had a lot of heart. Sure, he didn't say much, but in every other scene he's in, he's standing in the back-- because he's the tallest, of course, but also because he was the one who watched everyone's back, the one who cared most about the unity of the group, perhaps. It's said that people who wear silver can't keep secrets; but Snow was the exact opposite, not saying much unless he absolutely had to.
That's just my observation, though. Maybe it was all just a clever concept by Bobbie Mannix, the costume designer.
Comments? Maybe someone out there got a better view of Cleon's belt...

Wow man, that's actually really cool. I never really paid attention to their belts before, but now I'm gonna watch the movie again and look closer. Although, I think you are correct there.

What a nice topic!!!
Very good sister, this is great!!
You put in relation everyone's belt buckle with own character and I'm totally with your thought.
If you can put an image near each buckle descrition your topic will be 100% complete.

Re: The Warriors' Belt Buckles
That really is a great observation. Its amazing how in almost every culture there are universal was to symbolize someones essence, and who they are as a person. I think that those belt buckles you mentioned describe them perfectly. Whether they are tattoos, names, piercings, or scarification, people have a symbol that only calls to them. Sort of like a spirit guide that watches over you, and only can be a part of you. These symbols can only tell the story of how you came to be, and where you are going in this life time. Sort of like an inner map, that describes the journey and meaning of ones life time. Its not clear if it explains your destiny, but it is clear of the type of being that you really are.
Re: The Warriors' Belt Buckles
Good points. I have never thought about this.

Re: The Warriors' Belt Buckles
I thought it was just the fashion of the 70's but your right about it probably having a deeper meaning. The costumes a pretty detailed and thought out.

Great observation SnowGlycerine!!! Like most of us here I really never noticed that...I really have to take a closer look at their belts...I always noticed that Rembrandt and Ajax had belts but I didn't quite notice it for the rest of the Warriors...its really good how they have belts that connect to their character in the movie

Re: The Warriors' Belt Buckles
I actually thought that Ajax's buckle was actually the face of Ajax from Greek/Roman stories. It does resemble an actual historical mask, the Mask of Agamemnon (who was the brother of the king of troy).
If you want some background on the original Ajax(s) I posted a little history here:

Re: The Warriors' Belt Buckles
great topic,
there's a good shot of cleon's belt and buckle at the meeting.
just as cleon is giving luther a elbow to the face.
the buckle is oval in shape and seams to have a profile of a face figure in the center.
the face could be of a indian warchief. the color of the buckle looks bronze& turquoise like his jewelery.
the belt seams to have detail also, looks like leather stiching and engraving like designs around the belt.
as far as ajax's buckle i will have to agree that is a female face.
