i am a huge fan of the warriors and the original ps2/xbox game and having just recently found the pc2sx pc emulator to play it again (at higher resolution), i've persued my long time dream of reading and viewing the original content.
in the last month i've had some incredible help (from a talant i will not disclose just yet) and success reverse engineering the ps2 file format and want to share with you where i am upto.
so far i can read and display the model format. i have not started on the image format yet. theres lots more exploring todo (barely started, really.)
i want to make a pc port of this game that uses the original content (so far, ps2 is only supported). theres a few things i would like to incorporate into my program and that includes custom lua scripting (which will include a tool to write your own custom missions) and network support (multiplayer?). thats miles away from where i am now, but i am looking to take this there.
it will be a free program, hence why it will use the original content (you will need your ps2 disc in your pc) (this way i am likely to avoid piracy legalities). please, do not ask me to send you models. i do not condone piracy.
i have a scratch and purpose built opengl engine for this project. so far, im manually extracting the model data and using a small tool i wrote to convert them into models (obj files). i will spend the next month archiving every single model and its offset and start research on the image format. i must reiterate, no game files will be included with this program.
below are a few interesting screenshots i took earlier today with milkshape.
i will post any progress as it surfaces. i will also look into web domain hosting in the coming month if interest builds. this is an exciting time...!
please leave your thoughts.
best regards,
justin
