Moving to NYC?

I have always wanted to move to NYC. From the time I was little its just something about the city that I always loved. I have been there a couple times with my dad to see Yankees games. Though I was coming here on some insight. To anyone who lives there or knows anything about the area. Where is the best place to live? I am looking for the cheapest and safest place to live. I heard NYC is expensive to live in but dont know for sure. Anyone who could give me some help it would be greatly appreciated.
