Indeed, it is "Quadrophenia". I never remember how it is spelled. This
film was pretty much the brain-child of Pete Townsend, because The
Who came out of the 60's Mod scene in England. It is loosely based
on actual events where British kids would go to places like Brighton Beach
(not the one near Coney, obviously) to riot and rumble and create havoc!
Either you were a clean-cut, working-class, speed-popping Mod, or
you were a Rocker, witch was the English version of the American Greaser.

I forget how many people are on this site who are from the UK. I am not trying to "educate"
you all from across the pond about "Mod" or this or that. I know it is a part of your culture.
Respect to that. I am more concerned about younger folk in the states not knowing about
stuff from the 60's/70's and 80's I think.

I think Ranchgal is the oldest on these boards (even though she doesn't post anymore).  I believe she passsed the 6 0 mark.

Quadrophenia was on tv a couple of weeks ago.  Time hasn't been kind to it.  Its got a big cult following but even by 70's standards, the violence was tame.  Its watchable but not great.
Mods were a dying breed by the time I was hanging around the streets.  We still have small groups of revivalists and fans riding around on scooters with ridiculous ammounts of mirrors on them.  The Rockers were the overall winner in survival.
On a side note, It was good to see the Who at the half time superbowl show.

Agreed 9D. I don't really even think of it as a "gang" movie, even tho
it clearly involves youth gangs in the story. It's a story about a kid
named Jimmy who's just trying to figure out who ( no pun intended ) he
is. There are still some great scenes in that film tho IMHO. I still
can sit thru it every few years or so. "BELL BOY! BEEEELL BOOOOOY!"

quadrophenia was my favourite film but i enjoy it a lot less now.

mod as a scene despite its reincarnations (80s revival, britpop) dies out very quickly but the influence of original mod style and culture and everything that was happening at the time is huge its still so much of modern style and of course they were one of the very first youth subcultures so that influence is there.

people get very patriotic about mod stuff but the beauty of it was that it, in a rather british way, almagamated european (new wave cinema, italian tailoring, scooters) and american style (ivy league, jazz) to be relevant to what was going on in working class britain.
