What kind of things that are gone now do you miss?

Postby Scurvy Dog » Thu Nov 01, 2007 2:41 pm

I'm a nostalgic kind of guy, so I thought a thread on this would be fun. What kind of things do you miss that are no longer around?

Here are a few of mine:

Carnation Breakfast Bars.

Rondo. It was a lightly carbonated citrusy soft drink, ligher than Mountain Dew

Dodge Intrepid cars. We had one, loved it, and now they don't make them anymore.

Cherry Loves Cheesecake flavor at Cold Stone Creamery.

Coke made with sugar instead of corn syrup. Actually, you can get this at the Mexican grocery store, if the Coke was bottled in Mexico. You do have to check the label though, because they're starting to use corn syrup too. I think they also use sugar in Canada.

USA's Night Flight. This was a TV show on the USA Network that played obscure videos that were too "out there" for MTV, long before MTV had 120 Minutes for videos like that. They also played clips from bizarre cartoons and movies, and sometimes had interviews with cutting edge musicians. Talking Heads and Art of Noise were about as mainstream as they got!

Not Necessarily the News. This was a parody of a news program that showed on HBO, and was compeletely hilarious. Think of "The Onion" as a TV program instead of a newspaper. OK, now picture it 20 years before the Onion did it.

As you can see, a lot of my life has revolved around refreshments and entertainment.

I'm only 18 but I have started to realize that many of the things that I liked a few years ago are no longer in existence. The television programs I watched, the foods I loved and pretty much anything fun. I have a terrible memory so I can't think of anything in particular, but I will post them when I remember them.

 Hey I am nostalgic too...

I remember the record players...who has a record player nowadays...hardly anybody...trying to set the needle on the first song was fun!

T.G.I.F. on ABC...I loved to watch Perfect Strangers and Family Matters...

Here are some things I would've loved to experience...

Classic 50s cars...
Mom-and-Pop stores (which seem nowhere to be found nowadays)
50s diners
Drive-in movie theaters
4 generations: 50s-80s

If I think of anything else I'll post it... 8)

Excellent topic Scurv.  Well since we are aroud the same age, I feel you.  I remember talking to my father when I was a teenager and he would have this sad, nostalgic look on his face everytime we spoke about his younger days.  Now I understand how he felt.  Although not an old old man, I do miss my younger days and the things that were round then.

Music was better, films, television shows.

I miss  the Honda CRX from the 80's

I miss 1991-1993

Arsenio Hall Show

The real good action flicks from Arnold without the CGI

Carefree grunge attitude

Well good topic, I'm very nostalgic... well I'm from Italy, things are different in USA... but not too much, I suppose.

1st place: 1980-1990 my adolescence/teens... when I was 6, every sunday, I and my father went to the stadium... Italian Soccer... He explained me everything about soccer... :D
...so after 26 years I still go to the stadium, he watchs the matches on tv and everytime tells me "it's better on tv, out it's cold!!! :D... "what could I say?!?", I understand him but I miss those sundays. :D

SuperCar, Magnum PI and IMO the best series of all: "Happy Days"... Fonzie...ehiiiiii... thumb up!!!

An italian sweet (no longer available): kinda candy-icecream cone.

Collect (with the same kid's euphoria, I still do it) soccer picture cards... I don't know if you do the same in USA.

... and everything else from those years, actually I would also like to live as 18-25 in 1975-1990. :D

So I'd like to repeat what already written in same topic previous post, cause it's perfect: "Although not an old old man, I do miss my younger days and the things that were round then".
I'd only add... today it's ok, but yeah those days were wonderful!!! 8)

I think you can't help but feel nostalgic about everything in the past, unless your past was messed up.  When you talk to these vets that went and faought in WW II, you can see how they travel back in time in their eyes.

Being nostalgic is an expensive hobby.  Ive been tracking down on dvd old cartoon series from the 80's.

Artwork video covers instead of lame photoshop peices

Groups of kids with a ghetto blaster, stood on the street corner trying to breakdance instead of nowadays where they just try to nick your mobile phone.

Spending hours making a mix tape on a c90 cassette.

Being able to take the kids to the park without having to worry about discarded syringe needles and other discarded items.

Having a short feature or a cartoon shown before the main movie at the cinema.  We used to get a woman with a tray strapped to her, selling icecreams in the interval.

Being able to buy a round of drinks at the bar AND getting change from a five pound note.

Being able to glue 2 one pence peices together and fooling the vending machine into thinking its a pound coin.

When the lone ranger was the coolest hero on tv (yes im THAT old)

Being able to impress your school friends because you owned a banned video nasty.

When entertainers with hand puppets were considered to be funny.

Arguing with your friends over the subject of hulk could beat superman in a fist fight.

People with hand puppets considered funny: I'm glad you said that Shaun because Sesame Street was a classic show...R.I.P. Jim Henson...and thanks to Lions for the Muppet Show thread...thats another nostalgia...even a grouch in a trash can made us laugh...

I would like to add: financial issues were ideas of the future and we had no idea what was supposed to be done during Tax season...

hanging out with the other neighborhood kids without a care in the world

the days before September 11, 2001 and riding in planes and being in high-rise buildings wasn't a threat...

its already been mentioned...but when music actually made sense and there was more rhythm to dance to...and not just about the lover who dumped you and you really need them back...i feel thats all there is now

The movies back then were more real then today...most of them nowadays may use up a lot of technology...but look how it was done back in the day without computers...

When scary movies really scared us

Well these days, since I've 'grown up' (  ) lol I have a different group of friends, them being from my school. But back in the old days when I was a little kid I only hung out with those in my street, so really there was only about 5 or 6 of us. All we would do would be play football, fight (Dummy fighting of course but still very very brutal lol), play hide n seek, ask for a pound to go to the shops and get a drink and some penny sweets. I really miss those days, everytime me and my old friends talk we always remember something different and every time it makes me sad that those days are gone.

I also miss primary school. Back then all you cared about was your lunchtime football game and going home to watch cartoons. Nowadays theres the pressure of drugs, the pressure of exams, jobs, peer pressure, etc. The list goes on. I'd just like to go back to the good ol' care free days you know?

Good topic Scurv, that really got me reminising there lol

I miss Saturday morning cartoons and being able to gulp pizza, hamburgers, and shakes without gaining weight.

Thats sooo correct! Nowadays I feel I have to go straight to the gym after eating an 'unhealthy' dinner but back than you could eat anything and still be like a little stick. Man I miss the old days  :( lol
