Coney Dogs

Where I'm from, we have diners every few blocks that are called "Coney Islands." The best items there are Coney Dogs which are franks with meat-only chili, diced yellow onions and mustard. Of course you have to wash it down with a Vernors ginger ale  ;). I was talking to a friend of mine visiting from New York when he said that he hadn't heard of a "Coney Dog" before. I was shocked because I figured it had started in New York or Coney Island in Brooklyn. I want to know if anyone here has ever heard the term 'Coney' referring to a kind of hot dog or restaurant. If you haven't, then you're missing out  8).

Nathan's is THE BEST around. No Dog can touch those, T7. Living in Michigan, though, nothing hits the spot like a trip to the corner Coney Island. I had to go get some the other day after posting this topic  8).

Here is a pic on Wikipedia of the best Coney Island Detroit has to offer. Actually the second best but I couldn't find a good picture of the other one.

I'm from NYC and I've never heard of a Coney Dog...I'm guessing that the person who came up with it was from here and was trying to imitate those hot dogs...I don't know exactly where Nathans are located outside of NY but it could be possible that the person didn't want to get in trouble by opening a Nathans so he just came up with a Coney Dog...in honor of the Nathans in Coney Island...

As for Scurvy Dog's response...hope you enjoy your visit here...and there are a few Nathans in the city...Manhattan Mall on 34st would be one...Queens Center Mall is another...I think they have one at Kings Plaza in Brooklyn...thats all I know...its better to just check out the yellow pages...but if you want good hot dogs there's always Grays Papaya...they really tasty!!!

Swan, you have no idea. You get them so fast after ordering, they are at the table practically before you set down the menu. Anyone in the Detroit area give me a call and I'll show you a Detroit Coney on me, no limit. It's 2:30 as I'm posting this and I'm leaving in ten minutes to go and get some for energy in order to study. Thinking about it, these beauties are the only good thing to come out of Detroit besides the automobile.

By the way, new avatar.  8)
