By the way, what IS an Usher?

As far as i know an usher shows you to your seat at the cinema. But i don't know if wb meant it in that context so any other ideas.

When i go to the cinema i transport myself back to the 50's to a lovely cinema where a man with a torch shows you where to sit. A young lady (also with a torch) sells ice cream down at the front.
