Question about safety and street smarts in NYC for our NYC m

Post by Scurvy Dog »

Greetings forum NYers.

As most of you know, I visit NYC every year. This year we have an extra day, so we are going to try to hit Coney (last year it was closed due to heavy rain), and a few other Warriors sites (actual and filming). Are there areas where it's probably smart to avoid? I have heard that even for all the improvements to the city, there are still areas to stay away from.

The people we're staying with say to avoid The Bronx, Spanish Harlem, and regular Harlem at night. (They live in Battery Park.) Is that true? I'd like to check things out, but I don't want to find myself in any areas where I'm likely to get wrecked.

Well, just use your head and you should be ok. Try and stay in after dark and if people come up to your car and try to get you to roll your window down, just ask them to speak louder. Chances are they don't want to just chit-chat.
Also, sometimes the cops get on you for going around the block mutiple times and stupid things like that. Just be carefull and go with your gut feeling.

Well, think about.  Any where you really go on Earth, theres possibilities of running into some sort of trouble.  I mean lets not be stereotypical, with certain places.  After all my old school, which is on Bay 50th, is called John Dewey High school, which is considered the school of Coney Island because Coney is the next stop, is in the projects.  I have never been jumped in that area.  Theres basically low lives of every walk of life in any area.  So it does not matter where you go.  Just simply keep to yourself, and every thing will be alright.

Hey Scury,

I felt safe when i was there. I was riding the subway upto about 11.00p.m. I was in some rundown areas of Brooklyn looking for sites but, you just got to look like you know where your going. I had my camera and rucksack but, just walked tall.

You don't want to stay in when it gets dark that's when the place gets going. Just stick to the main areas at night. Like any place in the world just use street smarts ;)

I understand, what you mean Scurvy.  Well, I guess in general, I always believed that it was not necessary to watch out for a certain area, because I always believed we should not stop living for those who think they own a neighborhood.
