Tony Scott on remake
The problem with this project stems from the fact that it is a MTV production and that they are the puppet masters of what they want this film to be like. As with most film projects it is the company who instruct the director what they are looking for from the film and define it from the outset. I can just imagine the meeting between Tony Scott and the MTV excutives, Tony we want you to recreate the classic Warriors movie but we want it to be "real", to represent real life, something that the MTV generation/demographic understands.
The charm for me of the orginal was it flamboyant surrealism, the OTT gangs and the shear concept of the storyline of a gang fighting against the odds. I'm glad that the MTV remake is not a updated copy of Walter Hill's "the Warriors" and I'm glad that we are not getting updated versions of our favourite gangs like the baseball furies. There is so much scope to introduce new exciting ideas based around the main concept of one gang fighting their way home against the odds.
If you want to blame anybody blame MTV. Tony Scott has directed some good movies like "the Hunger". One thing I will critise T.Scott is agreeing to be part of this product. I also don't understand how the introduction of larger gangs is going to work. Instead of gangs of 30ish members we will have gangs of 3000 to 5000. I can just picture a Vermin like character saying, 3000 is a lot more than 8 and getting the response, not if they are f***'in wimps. Or will the Warriors gang trying to get home be a 1000 strong. Not great for character development and also a logistical nightmare.

i doubt i watch this movie, i tried to be fair about it....but lets hit reality, why are we talkin about a "remake" or a "based on"
here it is
big gang meeting, head guy gets shot, one gang gets blamed and other gangs wanna kill um
sounds like thats what we are lookin at in this film, if we get that

I had said right from when I started this site that the remake will only be based on the movie and that by calling it a remake would be wrong! I'm sure it'll still be worth watching and I don't think it'll affect the original movie since it is completely different, and is of course, a cult classic!
I'm surprised it's in LA and not New York though!

I love how he wants to make it not "outrageous," and wants things to be in the realm of reality, but the guy is going to feature cholos doing kung-fu. Give me a break.
Actually I'm a tad bit relieved, because this movie will really diferrentiate itself from the original, but in a way now that won't be bad. Instead of saying, "What the heck am I watching? Wire-fu during the bathroom scene???" the thing will just plain be different.
But it's obvious that he fears comparison to the original, perhaps that's why he's changed the setting and stuff, so they can't easily be compared.....But I live in the LA area, so I can'ty help but have my interest piqued at the thought of an LA riot type setting, but what is he smoking when he says it will be "the Warriors" vs 3,000 people? But that gives me a funny picture of all these real-life gangs, and these dudes in red leather vests running around...
But right now I feel a mix of :-s , 8-[ ,

If its going to be set now in reality, then theres no way that all these gangs would get together whithout guns, it just wouldnt happen.
No gang would get through an entire city whith tens of thousands of gang members with guns after them.
So he should keep it on a smaller scale, maybe even a smaller city where it would be more realistic that gangs hold a truce whith no firearms, lets be honest, the story dosent work today, with machine guns everywhere, the warriors wouldnt last an hour let alone a night.
The origional wasnt realistic, with all the camp costumes but thats where it was good, different gangs had different identities, a real life faceless gang has guns, not baseball bats.
They should keep it camp and out of reality, apart from punchups

in a way, i think it could be a positive with him increasing the number of gang members etc to put a contemporary slant on it.
however, moving it out of ny is disappointing because nyc is (to me being from the uk) a more recognisable and 'threatening' place. its where the warriors was obviously set but when you hear about dangerous gangs and crime etc from america, it tends to be from nyc.
also, aside the warriors (gang) the furies are the cult favourite. this is not a fact but its just my opinion.
im just thinking of poor kartoon!
they may loose a lot of fan loyalty through that stunt...a previous post describing the new look furies was very exciting!
i agree with the 'mack' about not calling it the warriors. rather, in another city with no furies etc, why dont he just make a contemporary gang film and declare that the warriros 1979 was a big influence. that seems to fit his plans more. he just wants the association with the warriors 1979 because of rockstar...which will rub off nicely for mr director.

Does LA have an underground tube system as I can't see them bopping there way back on the number 10 bus having the same effect.
The orginal was camp the second should be camper or futuristic. This would allow them the scope to bring in some new exciting looking gangs.
A comtemporary, realistic theme will mean watching dudes wearing big baggy trousers and wearing baseball caps (if really tough the wrong way round), etc, etc.............YAWN

If he's going to change everything he should just make a diffrent film. If he does this he wouldn't kill the reputation of the warriors

I think you should direct your anger towards MTV as they are the one's who outline the basic requirements of the end product. So the death of Tony Scott will not so the end of this RASPBERRY project.Warrior Ajax wrote:oh my god. He's trying to make it like Boyz N Da Hood. This movie is going to have serious Constantine disorder...
The name is being taken out of a historically rich and visually interesting city (for constantine it was London) and being out into LA, a city thats not oo fun to look at (minus Collateral) with no subway, crappy public transportation....
I can see it now:
Cochise: C'mon man, there's nobody out there.
Fox: Sure, unless you wanna get japped on an open bus stop.

From the Sounds of Things I hate to say it guys but I reall feel this will be nothing more than a Generic Brand Video MTV has made.
All I can say is I hope that Tony Scott can open his eyes rent the movie and see how the Movie got its name instead of Looking at todays pop culture.
I alos know not to always belive whats on the net but I hear tell that the Cast is gonna be one note Race.
Thats right Im not sure But I hear they are Using either a All Black Cast or a All Latino cast to get that "Gangsta Feel"
Lets hope these rumors are Just rumors

I forgot that it was an MTV production and wanted someone to blame for this poor excuse of a remake. But in all fairness MTV has been crap for a LONG time now so it's nothing new
I agree with your point about adding numbers in the thousands. Weird and stupid. He said in the interview that he wanted it to be like "Kingdome of Heaven" with thousands of gang members charging..what the hell? They're trying to make it realistic yet they have something this hollywood-ized.

Diceman piqued my interest and I looked at the LA Transit Site. Looks like they have a rail system called Metro. There is a rail map on the site and it is nowhere near as extensive as the NYC subway. I believe it is a pretty new system as well with only a shread of the character of the NYC system.
