I agree that Mercy wasn't ashamed of her lifestyle when she says, "I see what's going on next door and down the street. Belly hanging down, 5 kids and cockroaches in the cupboard."

I just watched the Mercy intro scene and was noticing something. That look she gives The Orphan leader when Swan says F-U. That is a priceless look. She is no fool. She knew just what buttons to push in that guy. That "how's it gonna look?" speech was not just to get a vest. She must have known that when faced with a real tiger, that guy would not fight. Those Orphans are like guys in high school who talk tough but really scare easily.
