9 is the same number as an army.The number of soilders in a group go accordingly: 5=War Party, 9=Army, 3=Trio,and 1=Bopper.

its not so amazing it was probley the first thign that came to mind or maybe the character designer of the movie couldnt think of another style for a 10th warrior so she left it there

now this is easy to figure out if you study up.
if you look closely, characters and gangs etc. are made up over walter hills interests.
EXAMPLE
walter hill was a big fan of cowboy's, western movies and john wayne.
so you could say, that cowboy was, walter hill's tribute to john wayne
(john wayne died that year i believe), and because he loved cowboys so much,
he created the character "cowboy".
ANSWER
walter hill was also a big fan of baseball, baseball has 9 players, hence "9 warriors"
