Important Changes To The Site

Post by War Chief »

Hi guys,

You may have noticed that the site was down yesterday. It seems like I used up my 30GB monthly bandwidth quota! Good thing it was at the end of the month! Still, the site is getting more popular these days so we are going to have to move server to one which allows loads more bandwidth (and one which is more reliable!). This will probably take place sometime in the next month. However, it will be a bit more costly for myself. What I propose is to produce a second site which people can subscribe to (a few dollars / pounds a year) just to keep this one going. I'm trying to think of some benefits which you could have! Any ideas are welcome. This site will remain free, as will the forum, which will be moved across. The shoutbox is also going to be removed as I can't control what gets posted there, and the forum is perfectly adequate. I've also got some new stuff to add to the site.

Thanks for making the site as popular as it is!!!
The one and only!

You might do better just to solicit donations than to try and come up with things that will "justify" a subscription in most peoples minds. And then even if you do their will always be people who subscribe and then share their "exclusive subscription only content" with everyone else. Then you have to worry about chasing them down and there will be hard feelings and all kinds of legal rigamaroo that you really don't want to be involved in.

A good case in point is Hyperspace for the upcoming Episode 3 on the official Star Wars site. Those people who would never subscribe, claiming George Lucas has all the money he ever will need and how dare he try and squeeze a few more dollars out of his loyal fans, have no problem sharing copywrited material all over the internet. Now, you get the people who DO subscribe (like me), seeing all these other people getting for free the same thing that they're paying for and you have problems. Couple that with the fact that LFL is spending millions on lawyers to send out all these "cease and desist" orders to everyone infringing on them and you got one big headache.

Maybe you could also consider having some official site merchandise like shirts & mugs. Use the profits to support the site.

Or maybe work out a deal to be an official distributer or dealer for the upcoming figures and video game. They would have to appreciate the fact that you have so many warrior fans in one place, so you might be able to get a discount, which you could then pass along to us.

I dunno, these are just some ideas. :)
