If The Warriors was released today.
If The Warriors was released today.
Let's just say The Warriors was filmed and released now and it was a movie based in 1979. Do you think it would hold the same resonance with people as it did in the 70's?
I think so.
I think the structure of the film, the wrongly accused underdog trying to make it home against overwhelming odds, would work today just as it did back in 1979. Times have changed, but people haven't.

I don't think so. It would lack alot of things that attract people now a days. Violence for one. Excellent topic though!!!

Re: If The Warriors was released today.
Actually there have been movies based on other time days like lets say for example Titanic. If The Warriors were released now it would likely draw attention. The violence in The Warriors doesnt have a whole lot of it as you would see in todays movies yet people from all ages still loves the movie so i highly doubt that if it were to be released now people wouldnt dislike it. If it lacked violence (which it does) no one would like the film in todays generation. Believe it or not there are movies that were made in the year of 2003 that were made to look like the movie was based in lets say for example year 1947 and would convince people that it was made from that time era. So no i dont think anyone would dislike the movie if The Warriors were released in todays generation.
Re: If The Warriors was released today.
Well sure there have been a few films now a days that can capture the spirit of the past, but it does not compare to the actual essence of the film actually being filmed in the 70's. If you think about it, yes we do like the whole theme of the "journey back home", but it also has to do with the feeling and culture f what that time specifically brought. Whether it was the music, styles, slang, customs, as well as ideals and issues that were made at this time, thats why people would prefer and grateful that it was released then and not now. Thats why if you notice, when some people don't care how fake a sci-fi movie from the 50's is, or what kind of graphics an adventure movie is, it merely the messages and morals that counts. Its the whole feeing of transporting ones self into a museum of the past and realizing what the aura of that time was. So in fact the timeline plays a very vital role of story telling, and what the imagination of the past as played in this time. The past, present, and future are all interconnected, and we cannot live without the other. Things happen for a reason, and if this movie did not exist then, then we would be loosing a piece of classic film history.

Well if it was, it'd surely be a big success the same, and almost surely a cult movie too!!!
But the impact movie would be another... even if people like us would immediately love it!
Why another impact? Cause I think today people is very different (well all of us know it) and it's very hard overtaking someone!!! I mean thanks to the web, 4 istance, we can know almost everything. So not only 4 "The Warriors", but also 4 other movies, today there is no more any kind of surprise when we watch a new movie. Instead in 1979 (and till about 1990)... well let's only imagine audience's feeling watching it ... gangs, fights, WarLords and WarChiefs, a new way of looking to New York... who knew that stuff!?!!
i.e. what I mean is that during last years, almost everybody watched 1979 The Warriors at least 1 time.
Also who maybe, doesn't like it or is not a "Warriorsmovie" member like us!!!
I don't think today almost everybody would watch The Warriors (if it was now released) with the same some years ago's euphorism. 8)

Re: If The Warriors was released today.
I also agree that it would attract people like it did back in 1979...it mainly has to do with the fresh faces that this film has...it really attracts the audience when you don't know who these people are...one wonders "hey who are these guys"...the same way some of the audience is attracted to the the different aspects in life that are not shown in everyday life...the Warriors was about gangs so of course it was different to the public to watch a movie about gangs...some thought it set a bad example and thats why it was a controversy showing it to the public...I believe its something that should definitely be put out there instead of brushing it under the rug and pretend its not there...it was definitely a big issue in New York City in the 70s and other places in the world...so its good to look back at the past...I'll continue with the Adam88's last sentence...we wouldn't only loose a piece of classic film history, we would loose a piece of real life...

Re: If The Warriors was released today.
It would attract people but not as much as the films with the huge gangs who all have shootouts.
I ask a person what do you want to see in gang films
most o them answer huge gun fights. It's the way gang movies turned out and the way gangs turned out too gangs would of at one day and age just used anything they could find but when guns came along every single gang wanted one. The gun rage of gangs was noticed and the old fist fight gang films were fading away. If you brought out the version we all know and love it may be popular but it would not reach the top which I hate to say. Which then makes me hate the warrior film werre going to see which probably has alot of gun action in it.

The visual impact of "The Warriors"
Today, It would be interesting to observe how new generations react to an era that was full of colors, soul, and why not..naiveness (yes, 70's flav). I am a history teacher, whenever I have a chance I show the film to my students, with a very enthusiastic response. Perfect film for a very visual crowd...

Lou, your first ten posts are supposed to be in the proving grounds. That was a good, insightful post, but I have to come down on everyone the same. I hope to see more of your posts once two days are up.
