Why didn't they just called?
Why didn't they just called?
I wonder why Vermin, Rem, or Cochise just didn't call the Warriors who were back in Coney after they found out about the blame being on them. I mean I am sure they could of found a pay-phone.

Re: Why didn't they just called?
That question does make a lot of sense, especially since they had Vermin (who was supposed to be in charge of the money) with them. There could be several reasons why, like fear, for lack of a better word. Maybe in all this turmoil, they wanted to just make it out alive... maybe it was a subliminal ego thing where they'd just be men and handle it their way... But if you think about it, it really would have put anyone else they called at a risk anyway, with the police and other gangs on alert, and clearly after them. They were so busy on the run, even if they had made a call, there would be so much explaining, so little time...

Re: Why didn't they just called?
It was actually better that the guys didn't call the rest of the Warriors...it would've made them look bad and weak...one way or another they had to stick together and they believed they could...the only help they needed was to believe they can get back whether they were bruised up or not...everyone would've worried and possibly meet them out at the station...for them to head out back to Coney after what happened a phone call may have turned into a big confrontation and too many questions...in case they showed it...it was better for them to struggle throughout the whole night without the help of others...get back to Coney...tired as they were...chill at their hang out spot and tell the rest of the Warriors what a long and dreadful night they just had...
and its good to see you're back SnowGlycerine

Well very interesting point Lions, I also think it's a kinda linking point to the book where as all of us know they made a call. Ye it's a different call, to their welfare worker, but always a call. Was you thinking that episode?
Anyway even to me a call would have been dangerous or useless, cause other guys, knowing about what they were blamed 4, wouldn't have been happy to enjoy them!!! 8)

Re: Why didn't they just called?
Youve just learned that every gang in the city is after you. Theres only three of you and your in hostile teratory which is un familiar. If i was in that situation, i wouldnt want to be out in the open, standing in a telephone booth. And who's to say that there was any phones around that was in working order and hadnt been vandalised? I think the main concern with vermins group was to keep moving and find the others, so as to let THEM know. Vermin and cochise are the muscle, not the brains. When the panic begins to set in, they needed a warchief to turn to.
The group may have had an opportunity to make a call at the station, just before the punks fight. Who would they call? The warriors are supposed to be all juviniles, so i would have thought none of them would have had a place of their own, and lived with family. Now if someone phoned my house in the early hours in the morning, handing the phone to my deliquent son or passing on a message would be the last thought going through my mind. Shouting some abuse and slamming the phone down would be the most likely outcome.
Like the book, they could have called their youth worker, but i would imagine they would only have an office number and no one would be in the office at that time of night/morning.
Other scenario's: The conclave was a big item. There could have been warrior members at the gang club house who would be listening in on the radio and figured out what was happening, and maybe they had a payphone nearby that could have been used for being contacted.
Its good that the film doest give you all the answers, otherwise we wouldnt have topics like this to ponder on.

Well I just can't believe no-one back in Coney didn't even wonder. Specially Cleon's girlfriend.

Re: Why didn't they just called?
Yes guys, that's what I've always thought... I mean the book is the book and the movie, well W. Hill made it like he just wanted. There was a topic, I'll search 4 it posting here the link, where I wrote it.Scurvy Dog wrote:That is pretty amazing. Maybe that's one of the reasons the scenes with her were cut out - because they didn't factor in what happened when they came home.Lions wrote: Well I just can't believe no-one back in Coney didn't even wonder. Specially Cleon's girlfriend.
Walter Hill essentially changed them from a gang of 120 to a gang of 9.
There could be Cleon's girl, other Warriors... but there wasn't anybody... so Scurvy Dog you're right about Hill cut that scene cause he wanted nobody to wait 4 them the morning after.
I've always thought Hill wanted we to understand that The Warriors weren't more than 9... or no more than 20 (just too many)... but that's just a strange thing, cause even if only 1 Warrior was in Coney, WHY didn't he wait 4 them??? It wouldn't have had any sense!!! I mean I would have banned him!!!
The "Warriors come out to play" scene wouldn't have been different, I suppose!!! Not even other final scenes!!!
So that's why I also think Hill's Warriors were 9. 8)

Re: Why didn't they just called?
Interesting. Well this kind of connects with the question of "why didn't they steal and hot wire a car?" Well my simple guess is that, no matter what the essence of "fear", will always keep you going no matter what. I know it makes no sense, because after all if they could take a break and take the time out to go with the lizzies(which was their flaw), then why not just stop at a pay phone. Well all I can really say is that certain situations like these cause you to sometimes, not focus to well. Your just really focused on your first priority, and thats getting home. If you think about, stoping for one minute could be severly dangerous. After all, take the example of what happened to Ajax and the female cop, as well as the incident with the lizzies. Any form of a brake caused some kind of interference and distortion in the journey. Thats my way of comprehending all this.

Re: Why didn't they just called?
considering they all took the trains, as many of the gangs did, just exactly who were they going to call, and where, and if they would have reached the rest of the gang say at a candy store or wherever---what good would that have done?? none of them looked economically/financially sound enough to have a car, how would reaching the rest of the gang have helped them?? Most of the time they weren't even sure where they were--and even if the gang was on alert--they didn't know if any of them would make it back anyway--
I don't see phoning for the rest of the gang to have been an option in any case--they could barely keep it together to get home from where they were, and bringing any more members into hostile territory would weaken the back home gang to the point where they may disintegrated all together--when you have the biggest gang in the city looking for you, do you really want everyone to end up maybe killed in hostile territory--NO you just want to get home where you know the turf--and keep as many together as possible, not drag everyone into territory no one knows. At least that is my take on the gang's mentality at the time.
No help could come, and it was up to them alone to get home.
