An Ode to the Rules: A GramercyRiff99 Production (Newbies please read)
Re: An Ode to the Rules: A GramercyRiff99 Production (Newbies please read)
Sadly, I am old enough to have seen this movie when it was first released way back in 1979. Back then I was working as a part time projectionist in an a military cinema in Germany when I saw this gem of a movie 5 nights in a row and got paid for it as well!! I cant say that it had a big impact on me ... I never joined a gang and wanted to fight with everyone, although rumour had it that there were some big fights happening outside or some US cinemas. However, this is a very stylish film which may not capture the true essence of gang culture, it makes the film goer believe in the sub culture of gang warfare in the big cities of the US. the fight scenes are not gratuitous but are well choreographed and the film score .... for the day (remember 1979 was the year of glamrock!!!) was spot on.
Warriors was the first film I ever owned on video and I must have seen it well over 20 times (it was a novelty factor when video first came out ..... ask your parents!!!). Just watched it again tonight on DVD and it still holds its own... even my daughter enjoyed it!
Google tells me there is a remake .... The Warriors (2008) ..... hmmm not so sure but will no doubt go and see it.
As a UK citizen I have been itching to visit New York for many years and was fortuanate enough to visit for 5 days this year (flew back to Heathrow yesterday). My daughter was somewhat bemused when I insisted on visiting Coney Island to see the funfair and of course the iconic Wonder Wheel which is the opening scene of the movie. The whole place has a real atmosphere about it ..... very run down and dilaptitated which only lends to its charm ... a must visit even if you aren't a fan of the movie!
PS ignore the BS about New Yorkers being rude and unfriendly .... had a real great time everyone was great and so helpful.............. THANKS NEW YORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I must admit, the first thing I'm doing if I ever win the lottery is taking my mate and retracing the Warriors route from Manhattan back to Coney, I've only ever been to new York once, at JFK on a stopover and really wanted to leave the airpoirt for a while but couldn't.

Because having rules that keep the site from descending into anarchy means that we're fascists, am I right? If you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to be here.LaCamza wrote: dont get it. is this some kind of fascist state you cats are running here?? or is it a site for the appreciation of a great movie?? forgive me,I'm new.
Re: An Ode to the Rules: A GramercyRiff99 Production (Newbies please read)
What exactly do you want it to be like? You want a place that you can run your mouth and curse or insult anyone? Or post a bunch of garbage? Those who join the site are here, like you said, to show appreciation for the film, but some come here to ruin it, those are the ones we don't want. So with that being said, we have rules, a true fan will obey them and will take notice on why we have them, if not, then this is not for you.LaCamza wrote: dont get it. is this some kind of fascist state you cats are running here?? or is it a site for the appreciation of a great movie?? forgive me,I'm new.

Y'know guys, whilst I don't think our polite friend here went about it the best way, I think he has a kind-of slightly valid point. The site does seem a little heavy with the rules, I mean every time a new member joins, almost every single person posts "Welcome, obey the rules!" It also shows up in the info bar every few seconds.LaCamza wrote: dont get it. is this some kind of fascist state you cats are running here?? or is it a site for the appreciation of a great movie?? forgive me,I'm new.
I'm not saying that all rules should be scrapped, and I undertand the reasoning behind them (every forum needs rules) but are so many needed? In the other forum I moderate we operate a warning system with bar, and a three strikes system, so on the third occasion of the rules being broken you are banned, and whilst we have the occaisonal problem, we've not been overwhelmed by spammers, and we've been going since '04
The main two rules that confuse me are the 5 posts a day, and the newbies post in the proving grounds. I understand that you don't want spam on the rest of the board, but it has been hard finding thread's to post in in the proving grounds, as most of the questions have already been answered. And limiting posts when someone could have something of great interest and worth to the site to post, but can't because they've reached their daily limit, seems a little strange to me. Maybe it's my experience on the other board that's clouding my judgement on this. I'm not going to leave because I love the Warriors and am glad I've found a place to talk to like-minded individuals, just offering up my humble opinion is all.
Cheers.

Re: An Ode to the Rules: A GramercyRiff99 Production (Newbies please read)
Whoa, back up. A newbie whom is questioning the rules in an articulate and reasonable way? I never thought I'd see it.
When it comes to the five posts rule, I have found myself questioning it more and more as well. As far as I can tell, this place is pretty much user-policed anyway, and most people who break the rules are called out and reported within short order. As such, I don't see why a limit on posts is really required anymore, since the mods no longer have to read every single post to keep the forums safe. However, whatever they say goes, and they're the ones who keep this site a good place to be, so I'll go with whatever they say without complaint. I'm no mod, so I can't have an idea of how hard their jobs are. I suppose I should also mention that I very rarely post five times per day, so this doesn't affect me much anyway.
When it comes to the proving grounds rule, there is a very good reason for that. About... damn, it must have been about six to eight months ago now, the site was devolving into anarchy. We were having tons of newbies register and make stupid posts in all areas of the site, breaking rules left and right, and generally making the jobs of the mods hell. As such, War Chief instituted a lockdown of the forums. No new registrations were allowed and people who slipped up were getting banned right away. I referred to it as The Great Purge. When he reactivated registration, he made it so that new bloods had to make their first ten posts in the proving grounds. That way we can weed out the rule breakers while they're all confined to one area, rather than posting all over the place. I think it's probably the best rule on here, since after two days you can be posting in the main forum anyway, so it's not too much of a hassle.
I hope I've answered your questions. I agree that this place is a bit heavy on the rules, but I prefer it that way because it keeps things working smoothly. Once again, INFINITE thanks for being reasonable about your questions. 99% of people who question the rules do something stupid like "OMG FASCISTS YUO ALL SUKC", so I'm always pleased to answer those whom are good about it.

Re: An Ode to the Rules: A GramercyRiff99 Production (Newbies please read)
No problem, I often find that people who talk sensibly will elicit a sensible response, which was what I wanted. I know the forum has existed for a few years and the last thing I wanted was to be seen as bopping in and questioning everything.GramercyRiff99 wrote: Whoa, back up. Now you've explained the Lockdown, the Proving Ground makes a little bit more sense to me. We had a similar issue on my board (the afore-mentioned occasional problem) where at one point the Mods took a fairly soft approach, and then in a 3 month period we were swarmed by lobotomized monkeys, so we brought more stringent rules in place and since then we've run pretty smooth.
The 5 post rule, meh, I think that might benefit from either being increased to 10 posts a day, or removed. From what I've seen on here, there a quite a few people here who really contribute to the wellbeing of the forum, with intelligent and useful input, and to put a daily cap of only five posts on that seems a little harsh, but again that's just me.
I think two days is a little unrealistic, it took me over a week to get to 10 posts, and that was mainly because there weren't many threads in the Proving Grounds that I could post in without wanting to threadmance. Maybe that's just me not wanting to post a couple of lines here or there. Again, meh.I think it's probably the best rule on here, since after two days you can be posting in the main forum anyway, so it's not too much of a hassle.

Re: An Ode to the Rules: A GramercyRiff99 Production (Newbies please read)
I understand the need for rules. As someone who has been harrased on this forum before I certainly don't want to come on just to recieve messages from some sad act who doesn't have anything better to do than sit and constatly ask me 'what I look like', 'Where I live' and ' Do I have a boyfriend' That isn't my idea of fun.
But some of the rules I do find a little unfair. Not in a Nazi state way just in a 'Aww Bummer' kind of a way. Like the 5 post a day rule. I personally have the memory of a goldfish and I forget constantly how many posts i've done in a day but each of my posts have never been inappropriate or spammish (...Shut up, it is a word!) In a way I agree with the 10 proving ground posts too because it stops random wasters from spamming all over the board (Meathead anyone?) but at the same time, it's not as easy as posting 5 posts a day due to the lack of proper discussion. It's all "hi i'm new here" posts and theres only so many times I can say "Hi and Welcome!"
That being said...the 10 posts CAN be done. It just might take longer.
