Were the Warriors a real gang? Sorry if its dumb to ask this

Post by psyko_warrior101 »

I saw the movie and thought it rocked but i mean like were they based on a real gang tho? So many people say they were but some say that the book based on the movie was real. I also read that while the events on the warriors happened NYC had problems of their own at the time. can anyone answer this question? Hu cares if they were real or not tho I think they rock, but wats u guyz' opinions?
Looks like Rebel doesn't look too happy. Just be lookin' good out there...

The Movie was made something like 10+years after the book, so they went with a more modern( for the time anyway )motif.

As I posted earlier, the gangs from that time looked exactly like what you see represented on screen( The Warriors I mean, the other guys are pure theatre; guys in top-hats with painted faces would get jacked on principal alone ).

I don't rem now guys if this is just a new topic or not. I don't think so... anyway...ok...use the search button... but ok...
Now, if The Warriors from the Movie are the same Warriors from the Book by Sol Yurick, remember that Walter Hill (Movie Director) changed something. I mean: Warriors personal names, story plot... other details... etc...
Moreover, the book is based on The Anabasi by Senofonte... and on what Sol Yurick knew about Gang's life, living and working in New York. But Book and Movie are not based on a true story of an exact Gang ran away from a meeting. Even if it's also true that during those years, The Big Apple and The Police saw a real Gang Meeting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoe_Avenue_peace_meeting
At last, the real Coney Island Gang name is The Crazy Homicides... not The Warriors... even if Sol Yurick choosed just the most SYMBOLYC name of all. If you read The Anabasi, you can understand what I mean!!!
Well, I think this is enough... I mean about your doubt. 8)

The gang is fictional, and the gang in the novel was also a fictional all-black gang, and the story takes place on July 4th (it was symbolic of black freedom / independence).  This was a missing element in the film version that the author hated, although he understood it would have been hard to sell this as a mainstream film in 1979.

They are not real, although some of the extras were real in real gangs.

Great Link! Thanks!

I'm sure it's hard, if not downright impossible, for surviving gang members from the 60's and 70's to look back on thier time in any sort of nostalgic or romantic way( especially when you lose friends or family due to the lifestyle ), but when you contrast thier era with gang activity from about 1985 on; a switchblade to the arm sure as hell beats a shotgun to the chest.

Peace.

No problem about that link. About the rest, I just think that was an amazing Era... good or not...it was anyway Great!!! A switchblade better than a gun? ALWAYS!!! More Courageous!!! 8)
