Authenticity.

Post by lightbringerrr »

I've seen several pictures of gangs from Queens and some other burroughs that were taken in the late 70's, long before music like The Sugarhill Gang, and they look exactly like the characters from the movie.
They got so many things right about this film, I really dread seeing it's good name used to make some modern-day 'Fast and the Furious'-type crap.

I think some Movie Vests are better (obviously cause are for a Movie) than the vests from those pics you saw (I think I know the website you mean). But The Sugarhill Gang, apart the name... "Gang"... were really a Gang? If it's true that some Rappers were in a Gang before (and then) becoming Rappers, I don't think it's the same for TSG. Well, we would need better info before... anyway Ladies and Gentlemen... The.... Sugarhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiill Gang!!!

I was wondering why Fast and the Furious is being compared to the The Warriors:?
I didn't really see anything "gang" related in that movie just a bunch of street racing with no gang activity that I could see, the only connection I can think of is that street racing is highly illegal and gang activity is also illegal........ I would categorize the, refake (as I call it) as more of a Get Rich or Die Tryin' type of movie

I work with a guy whose friend played one of the Turnbull ACs.  He told him that real gangs used to show up at the sets complaining the film was making them look silly and that they took it as a sign of disrespect.  And being a New Yorker, MOST of the gangs in THE WARRIORS are VERY unrealistic.  Trust me!

Few gangs actually looked like their counterparts in the movie, well im guessing but it would seem that way. I think we need to spread the word about the original Warriors movie before the new name stealing movie comes out.

edit:nevermind, just found out there is no remake

Well Yak, it's just what I meant in my post above. I'm not a New Yorker, but it's very easy to understand that normally in a movie "things" are different compared to real "things". So, I wouldn't know if they were "very unrealistic" but I'm sure they were different.

Allow me to clarify:
I meant that the Warriors( and the Warriors alone )looked most like the real deal. As I posted on a diffrent thread; everyone else( fun and interesting as they are )was pure theatre.

I don't think TSG was really a "gang" in the truest sense of the word, it just sounded snazzy for the time.
The pictures I refer to are part of a history of rap/hip-hop in NYC, and how the destruction of housing to make way for the Freeways and Highways threw everything in to a state of eventual "Ghettoness", primarily in the Bronx and Queens.
There was a lot of stuff about Bambata and some other cats, but it's been awhile since I've seen the material in question.

It was not so much a comparison( because there really IS no comparing the two, other than to say one movie is timeless, and the other franchise is trendy at best )as a deridement of how Hollywood has gotten worse and NOT better when it comes to creating something from nothing.
This whole west coast gig is simply slapping the name of a Great movie on to thier newfangled piece of crapola.

AHA! I see now, you are 100% correct about the West Coast idea totally ruining The Warriors name and I agree wth you about how Hollywood has come up with nothing original for some time, except Cloverfield, I really enjoyed that movie because of all the questions it left unanswered. I also think that by making the movie more modern the integrity of the characters would be lost because the original Warriors had come from a very poor lifestyle and there was a completly different gang mentality than there is today.

Absolutely, and Cloverfield is EXACTLY what I was thinking of when I made that post. Great minds think alike!

ADDENDUM:

Just so I am not misinterpreted, I meant that Cloverfield is a Great example of breaking new ground. Yes, Abrams used what I like to call 'Blair Witch Seizurevision', but the Content of said Seizurevision was much more compelling than the movie said filming 'technique' was borrowed from.

On another note and for those who have not yet heard, the west coast "Cyrus" will be played by Vinny Barbarino himself; John Travolta. Pardon me a moment while I try to keep myself from throwing up...
Ahhh; much better.
I don't care how "sinister" he was in 'Swordfish' or how "witty" he was in 'Pulp Fiction', this really makes me want to reach for the Pepto...

I also forgot to mention about Cloverfield how it makes you want to watch it again and again because there are all of these little details in the movie, this is one thing Hollywood has failed to add to their movies, now I admit there are some good sequels they have released recently, I did enjoy Spiderman 3 but I am just not able to bring myself around to watch it again, maybe in a few years I might pull it out and watch it again but currently I don't really want to. Now Hollywood has released many titles like that in the past decade. These movies were good, but only good enough to warrant one viewing for awhile. With Cloverfield's attention to little details it absolutely amazes me, because I want to watch it again and again, just like The Warriors and the Mad Max series. When I first saw it my friend and I went and saw, this was his second time seeing it but he mentioned that he wanted to see if he could spot a few things he thought about after he watched it the first time. I noticed a couple of things myself and a couple days later I was looking at the plot summary online and found some things I missed and I really want to see it again to find these details. If you want information about these details just PM me, and I will be glad to share my opinions on them
