No go areas ?

Hi,

I would be interested to learn your thoughts on this subject. The Warriors had to bop their way through some pretty 'inhospitable' areas of NY. I know that NY has had a dramatic change over the years, and it is a much safer place now than it was 20 years ago. But, are there places that New Yorkers wouldn't wish to wander around at night?

I live in Manchester England, and there are a couple of places here where I wouldn't like to be after dark. There are some places where the bus sevices stop at dusk, and the police/fire service are very reluctant to go their in case their vehicles get torched. There have been pleny of incidents where the police and fire service have been shot at whilst trying to undertake their duties.

I have been to all 5 NY boroughs, and I thought the Bronx was the 'roughest' but what at your thoughts?

its changed now. im from england too but from what i have heard there is some place where people wont go but mainly its just like good old england

I'm not from New York, but I was there last Summer and I asked several people about this thread... so, as aiax2610 said, it's really changed now. I mean, what I know is that only Harlem-Manhattan (but only Harlem northest Avenues) and South Bronx are somehow, still dangerous. Anyway, if you enter the "Wolf's Nest" (I think you know what I mean) every place can be dangerous...
Well, we'd just need a New Yorker here, to be sure!!! 8)

As far as The Bronx went, the Simpson Street section (made famous in Fort Apache The Bronx) was a no-go in 1979. If you weren't Italian, or even white, the Little Italy section in the Bronx was also off limits.

New York City in the '70s was bad ass; now it's a Disneyland for wimps! No Joke.

Well, at last an updated info by a New Yorker (I think). You also talked about New York... Disneyland... and all the rest... but, are there anymore "off limits areas" today in New York City? I mean, not even one area?

Yep I'm from the NYC area ... I've lived in the Bronx since 1973 and NYC since 1971 ... back in the 1970s every area of the city had off limits sections. Living in Manhattan and The Bronx back then meant you encountered the real gangs that hung around the streets. In 1972 on East 19th Street in NYC you had the Black Spades. Moving to the Bronx the following year I encountered an Irish neighborhood gang, the name I can't recall. 

By 1979 many of The Bronx gangs had been joined by Latino and Hispanic "crews." Over the mid-late '80s dealing and using weed, coke and later crack would "ruin" them. Even the Arthur Park Boys in Little Italy were gone by the early '90s due to jail, drugs and the few that actually grew out of the life.   

Today, because of the heavy police presence and the $$$ coming into the city you're safe pretty much anywhere.

WOW!!! I'm from Palermo-Italy and I'm PROUD to be from there!!!
But, believe me I'd like to be from New York too!!! I love that Metropolis!!! Even if I live in LA BELLA ITALIA, that's for sure Lion, BTW hi Fratello!!!
Anyway, we did have similar problems here in Palermo... maybe you know what I mean... but yeah, New York every day life was/is just another "thing". NO DOUBT!!!
Now, as you read (my post above) I was in NYC last summer... and I asked several people I met, about '70 NYC real life... so, I'd have another question:
What do you know about 18th Avenue Brooklyn during those years?
Moreover, you know, The Black Spades... I think you know that site about '60-'70-'80 Street Gangs.
Then, Zero Tolerance by Rudolph Giuliani against drugs and all the rest, well I think it was a good move.
What do you New Yorkers think about?

Im from the bronx myself and trust me Bedford-Styvesant i think thats how you spell it is one of the roughest places in NY. Bronx has been getting calmer no more crime rates since back in the 80's on 183st or Creston avenue in Morris Heights, where i am from. But i dont know. This is my opinion. Haven't heard anything new since that last kid was shot by the cops a few months ago down the block on Burnside Avenue on creston ave.
