Swan and Mercy

Post by Stillwell Avenue »

Hi I'm a newbie, I'm really happy to have found a forum with so many boppers who have a passion for one of the greatest movies made and a master piece of film making. I have seen the movie so many times since I first saw it in 1983 but the bit in the film that has always got me wondering is when Swan says to Mercy when they arrive back on Coney,  something like" This is what we fought all night to get back to, well maybe I'll just take off" and then he says to Mercy something like " Where have you ever been" and she says " Well, I have never been no where but I know I'd like it"  I can't remember word for word what they said to each other but it always gave me the impression that both characters were going to leave street and gang culture for fresh fields after looking out on Coney Island on a dreary morning after running and fighting for their lives all night.  Does anyone else think that maybe they were going to take off and pursue the American dream a fresh?

welcome to the forum  :D

i thought about this myself as i started a bit of fan fiction a while ago set where the film ended off. i don't know for sure, obviously the film lays out that possibility and ends on an uplifting tone which does suggest they will have a better life and leave it all  behind with the song about wanting to get out of the city. but i guess you have to think what you want from them walking down the beach at the end it could be theyre walking away from it all or that theyre still back at the ocean they fought all night to get to and at theyre beloved coney after all and that there is beauty even in the city.

personally i imagine, in real life, swan wouldve have struggled to separate himself from the warriors and would have been very split between mercy and his gang.

That thought crossed my mind, too.

But then, well... I think it's hard to leave that kind of lifestyle behind. Could you seriously picture Swan and Mercy working decent jobs, behaving as socially acceptable people? Maybe other fans can... but I can't. :| But if they did leave it all behind to "live the American dream anew" then hey, more power to them.

Well i think Swan does end up liking her at the end of the movie and i think mercy did aswell, but technically we dont know obviously cause there isn't a sequel to the warriors ::)

But i think they would make a good couple, but depends if swan ends up liking her enough cause he did mention he doesn't like the way she lives and picks on her abit in the movie not too nice to her, then feels guilty about kissing her, so yea im not sure.

i could envisage Swan leaving that life behind and becoming a productive member of society but not Mercy she was too much of a hoodrat to ever change

To be perfectly honest, even back when I was a kid and after that
particular scene, I always figured that they would leave together and
head out west. I always had this image in my mind of them ending
up on a ranch or farm out in the country. Swan seems like a thoughtful
type of person, looking for a little piece of mind, and he could be a
good influence on Mercy too. I think at least her heart is in the right place.
