I doubt Mercy was the type to have a "boyfriend" as she wasn't the settling down type until she met Swan. Her scene with Swan in the underground did suggest she was a promiscuous young lady and I doubt the orphans leader was enough to keep her satisfied ;)

Mercy was so ambiguous when she spoke, "I want something now" "This is the life I got left!" What was she referring to? I think Ajax knew what she was and in 1979 it wasn't such a dangerous thing like it is today. One more thing about the scene when the Orphan leader says,"I should've slapped your mouth..." What was his hand doing?
"When we see the ocean we figure we're home, we're safe."

Thay are reffering to the tact that she will cause trouble.

I don't think she's a prostitute. Just a girl who wants some fun. Mo i don't want any fun with her thanks.

I agree, I do think the Warriors were thinking of her more as trouble than as a prostitute BUT I think she was ALSO a prostitute. I am thinking she may not have been a streetwalking pros--but I do think she exchanged sex for money and or favors, both within and outside of The Orphans.

I think she may have been one of the gangs girls---but I also think she went off on her own with whom ever could give her something.

I base this off the conversations in the tunnel with Swan.
He was accusing her of being a pros---(why don't you just ty a mattress to your back: you don't care where it is do you)

SHE never denies that---(Friday nights are good, Saturday nights are better)

While it is obvious she isn't going to charge Swan (or Fox) for anything---I do think it would depend on what she wanted----and who was around that could provide it for her.

I also could see her graduating from picking and choosing in the neighborhood, like she is now----to streetwalking fairly easily!
Right now, she is just lucky---she isn't on any dope habit, (yet) and she seems healthy. But she may well be right about "This is the life I got left."

So yea, I think she got money and or favors for sex, but I don't think she charges EVERYbody, I think she picks and chooses.

I always got a weird brother and sister vibe from them.... Maybe it's just me, but I think she's the younger sister, and she's making fun of her older brother because he isn't willing to rumble with The Warriors right off the bat, he was going to let them pass through.

For some weird reason the thought that they were brother and sister flashed through my mind for a split second til the rest of the scene played out. It just reminded me of how my brother and I would try to but into each others circles of friends when we were hanging out. The Orphan leader kinda had that "shut up and go home and leave me alone now!" attitude about him that my brother would have.

WEll they have similar coloring, dark hair/dark eyes--and aren't afraid to get in each others faces---I guess I could see that , and it would make some sense too. And why no one hassels her when she starts to follow them.

I also always felt that when Ajax says "you know what that is, dontcha?" that he meant trouble, and Ajax didn't correct Cowboy's answer of trouble.

I never really thought Mercy was a prostitute, although there's a chance she may be. When she walks down on the stoop, I always thought she simply lived there. I always saw her as not just a mere slut, but a poor Bronx girl who grew up on the streets and is very lost, who has made tons of bad choices and needs to feel loved or wanted, therefore sleeping with men amost every night. That's why she's hanging with a gang like The Orphans instead of a thousand other "name" gangs.

She talks about how much she sleeps around, and it doesn't seem to bother the Orphan's leader since he/they let her stick around. Even the Epstein-looking sidekick semi-pleads with Mercy, "stop looking for trouble now," instead of simply saying "shut the **** up, b****," so she ,ay have them under her thumb to a degree (although she obviously likes to be abused too). And maybe she is sleeping around for some cash (Saturday nights are even better") or maybe some drugs.

I like that they don't spell out clearly just what Mercy is. One thing I like, is when Swan says "she may even like it" about pulling a train on her, she gets angry despite the fact that she WOULD like it, because Swan saw her for what she is, and even though she knows too, she knows deep down she's tragic and doesn't want it pointed out necessarily. But I tell ya, whoever they had on makeup, he/she did a great job on Mercy, the actress looked just like a poor, spent slut from the NYC streets.

Well put. I agree. I dont believe she was a prostitute. I think she was from the neighborhood. The way the leader and the other orphan talk to her, they seem like they know her very well. They know how she is and they know that she will cause problems for them. When Swan makes the comment about the matress on her back and she says saturdays are better I dont think she was refering to money rather than her chances of getting laid are better. She is just a skank from the hood and wanted something new. She needed someone to get her out of the scene she was in.
