Early Review of Region 1 DVD

Post by Harley »

Walter Hill likes his movies to speak for themselves? O.K. we've heard what it has to say, now what we're saying is that we want to hear him speak. Come on Walter. SPEAK, tell us about the movie! Explain what happened when you had to kill off Fox, what was it like being threatened by gangs as you filmed, your love of baseball and KISS, we want to hear it all!

Waving director commentary and deleted scenes at us and then not delivering it is like waving red meat in front of a hungry Tiger and then throwing it away. Nothing good can come from it!

You know what the fans want, NOW GIVE IT TO US!

"Disappointing" would be a severe understatement.

And... comic book insertions? Truly revolting.

Truthfully I have been thinking about getting a R2 machine for a while now, for some cool stuff not on DVD in America. This may just push me to do it. Kim's Video btw sells R2 DVDs. I imagine they'd get The Warriors R2 too.
Big Cyrus. He was gonna run the whole city...what crap that was.

I just got a copy of "The Warriors Directors Cut" and I pop it in waiting to see the begining shot of Cleon talking to his girlfriend on the boardwalk and instead I get this comic book page of some Roman soldiers in a battle and then the coney island wonder wheel in comic book form and I'm like WHAT??? Am I being punked??

I cant tell you the dissapointment I felt while sitting through the movie and watching scene after scene transitioning into a comic book. This is a joke of a special edition. I thought finally I could get rid of the uncut video tape I bought on Ebay but I guess I should be lucky to have it since it's the true directors cut.

The label should have said "The Warriors Comic Book Version" that way
I would have stayed away from it. Maybe one day someone will put out a true uncut version of the classic movie but until then I'll just pop in my tape and just wish.

Early Review of Region 1 DVD

Steven, I have had a few region free, PAL-NTSC players for a a few years now and they rock! I have SEVERAL discs not available here. There are many reasons I have a region-free, PAL and NTSC player. Last week I watched my Korean copy of "A Midnight Clear" in OAR, Anamorpic WS. R1 is only Fullscreen non OAR. I also recently watched my Australian R4 copy of "Innocent Blood" which is not only anamorphic WS (as oppossed to the really bad looking R1 Fullscreen version) but it is a longer cut of the film. I have my Japanese "Rollerball" SE, original 75' film. Anamorphic WS and new doc. that R1 doesn't have. I have my R2 PAL "SW ep.1 Phantom menace" and "Gangs of New York" and the PQ is MUCH better with much less Edge enhancement and filtering. I recently watched my Superbit version of "CE3K" from Japan which looks alot better than my old R1 and DTS. I just got my ALIEN quadrilogy set from Japan with DTS on all 4 films and better PQ on ALIENS through RESSURECTION and my Japanese Superbit "Jurassic Park" set is coming. I will soon probably snag the "Taxi Driver" Superbit and The Japanese full bit rate DTS "Underworld" and "Sleepy Hollow" discs.... The list goes on and on..... I recently got The LOTR extended editions on R2 which have been pitch adjusted and remarkably well IMHO. Also the PQ on them is noticeably better than the R1's, especially "Fellowship". And if you have the chance to see PAL at 576P, 50 hz. natively, it's pretty amazing compared to NTSC. No 3/2 pulldown, Over 100 lines more. res.
So yeah, it's always a tossup, PAL- 4% speedup but better potential PQ vs. NTSC correct speed but less res. and 3/2 artifacts.

Now this doesn't mean that all overseas or PAL versions are superior. (Many PAL transfers don't look as good as the NTSC versions even with 100 lines more res.) but there are several good review comparison sites and at least being region-free, it's up to me which version that I buy and enjoy, NOT some stupid studio imposed region restriction.

If "The Warriors" SE in R2 has more features like the commentary and deleted scenes, I will probably get it. But the way the new cut sounds, UGH! That's NOT "The Warriors" that I remember. They should have both versions on a 2 disc set so we get the original with anew 5.1 remix!

Got a tad to technical for me there Dave but agree multi region is a must as many DVD's releases are only available in certain region formats and differing regions often have different features.

Personally I would be surprised if region 2 has director's commentary and the additional deleted scenes when region doesn't and if that is the case I do have to wonder what Walter Hill has against you americans.

Have Paramount dropped the ball???.

The reviews would suggest so. I can only hope War Chief sources are right and the region 2 DVD doe's contain a director's commentary and 7 deleted scenes.

Sorry, dice!

Well, the new "Titanic SE" is being released by FOX in R2 is both a 2 disc and 4 disc set while Paramount is ONLY releasing a 3 disc version here in R1...! There is a whole extra disc we aren't getting here so yeah, Paramount can suck at times....

Does sound like Paramount doesn't like you guy's. This however does give me some hope that the region 2 may have the extra features. What a bizarre world we live in.

I've just recently learn't Paramount have purchased the film rights to the classic Luke Rhinehart book "the Diceman". You may of guessed it's my favourite book :D . I can only imagine what Paramount will do with the story of "the diceman". All I can say is I'm glad MTV didn't acquire the right's.

got the R1 director's cut DVD last night.. i was surprised to see the comic-book intro opening and a few comic-book intermissions in the whole movie and a comic ending (no live action showing the Warriors walking on the beach when the credits roll) and a couple of "turning pages" in a comic format when it changes from one scene to another.. also i noticed there are some "zoom-ins" or "zoom-outs" in some certain scenes to enlighten the mood.. for example, when Luther aims the gun at Cyrus - the scene zooms out slowly.. and when Luther looks at Fox, the camera zooms in closer to Fox face when he stood there watching what Luther has done..

no deleted scenes here.. only 4 featurettes, some are interesting - some are not.. but they did add the opening with cleon and his girlfriend but they didn't show the whole part of it..

watching the new version of the Warriors is like watching Creepshow and i like Creepshow better than this "new" Warriors.

the new 2nd opening scene with the Greeks.. i think it should be left out.

This whole thread is just filled with horrible news. I was SO looking forward to this DVD, and now, well, I am not looking forward to it much at all. I will still buy it for the extras, and to see the changes, but I am sure I will shoot myself for doing so, after viewing it.

This is just starting to suck more and more. Someone has to get an R2 copy to make sure they're the same. This could've been the best SE dvd ever and it's turning into a disappointing mess IMHO.

I might not even buy it now. I want the real, original version to always be in my head.
