I haven't watched the extras but I did watch my favourites bit sof the film.

Picture - Better. The original was OK so the improvement isn't huge but it is noticeable.

Sounds - Lots better. It really shows in the music which is excellent. I did think that they could have made an effort to put in some surround effects but while it's not the best 5.1 mix ever it is true to its mono origins.

Comic book transitions - OK, I preferred the original but I've kept my old DVD so I've still got that version. Love to get the TV version one day.

Deleted scenes - well it's to the director whether he wants them in his film but not having them as extras is wrong.

Perhaps if remake, reissue and game are successfull we'll have the 3 in 1 branching edition next year!

Bought the new DVD at 9am on Tuesday and have been so busy I didn't get to watch it until last night. I held off on buying the original DVD becuase i have the original VHS copy and knew this edition was coming. I agree with everyones gripes but would still encourage everyone to get this version for the featurettes alone. For me , the best thing this version has going for it is it is the closest I'll probably get to seeing the picture look as crisp as it must have in it's original theatrical run. I've was introduced to The Warriors during it's run on Cable TV in the 80's so it was nice to see theatrical quality picture for the first time. Personally, I'm now on the market for the original DVD - but glad to have this cleaner better sounding version in my collection.

You can print out a contemporary map of the subway and keep it in the box...

Image

For its inclusion as a DVD feature, Paramount would probably need a permission from the whichever-US-government-institution-it-is that is responsible for New York's public transport and/or plans.

Anyway, there is already so much wrong with the new DVD that a lack of the map as an extra is not among the biggest problems...

Review in New York Time Out magazine. It gets a star for "recommended";

" The new DVD of The Warriors may be the first "director's cut" with no additional footage. Instead of extending or restructuring his street-gang saga, Walter Hill has added animated interstitials and a Star Wars-style opening crawl in order to clarify the story's origins (the plot parallels the ancient Greek mercenary Xenophon's memoir Anabasis) and make it more obvious that the action takes place in a Mad Max-esque future (a choice Hill made, the supplements reveal, to rationalize the studio's insistance on casting white actors as the principal gang members). In lieu of the original "wipe" transitions, scenes now morph into comic-book panels, complete with boxed "Meanwhile..." captions. Such devices may sound pretentious but they make it easier to swallow some of the hokier elements (such as the Yankee-themed Baseball Furies gang) and save the film from cornball-relic status, allowing it to play as a giddy pulp spectacle. Bonus Features: Laurent Bouzereau, the master of the retrospectave doc, interviews the stars, Hill, and producers Lawrence Gordon and Frank Marshall in a quartet of informative featurettes about the making of the film and its impact on pop culture." There is also a picture of the gang in front of Staunch's bath house.

Also, for those that don't already know, that comic book version of Anabasis was being read by one of the Dominators (The Warriors) in Sol Yurik's book. Towards the end during the final ride to Coney Island they read it on the train and see the similarities with their own situation.

My homeboy Dave Walker's review from W.W. (Portland Or)

Post by MESTIZO69 »

Here's a review link of the new DVD from an old friend of mine whom i've known for many years..His name is Dave Walker..He currently writes for Willamette Week, which is Portland's biggest news and culture mag..I've got a lot of respect and love for Dave..He writes very honest, well written, sometimes hilarious 'In your face' film reviews, that some out there occasionally are not mentally strong enough to handle or may not agree with period..Either way,he could care less..

He's a major film buff..he's a screenwriter,director,actor..the whole nine..He intermittently publishes a really cool underground cult cinema mag called 'Badazz Mofo',some of you out there may of heard of it..I forget which one it was,but he had a Warriors 20th anniversary issue(obviously 5 yrs ago)

He specializes in Blaxsploitation films..Soul Cinema..He made a documentary he's planning on releasing called 'Macked,Hammered,Slaughtered & Shafted', which i hear is off the hook..He's got another flick in the works as well..Dave and I have always had so much in common..We're both major George Romero fans and archivists..the same goes with The Warriors,as well as so many other great films,directors,actors,genres..so forth, that have any sort of hip value or worthiness.

I'm truly hoping that either Dave has been a secret member of this site for awhile or that he's gonna become a member, because he definately belongs here..He's extremely busy though..but aren't we all?..Anyway,nuff said..Back 2 Coney, Mezzy ;)

I was thinking of that Marlboro! That can tie in with the use of the Greek comic at the start and using comic panels in the movie, thanks for bringing it up.

I have to disagree with his last paragraph---to die hard fans, the extra featurettes make it worth the money----IF the dvd didn't have them, it wouldn't be worth the money. I spend more time watching the featurettes than I ever will the movie on that disk. But that is personal opinion. I thought like War Chief does, it educated me on some things and cleared somethings up for me, and generally gave me a great insight into different aspects of filming this wonderful film.

I was waiting for someone to mention that..Yes Ranchgal I definately agree.. I just did'nt want to be the bad guy this time, since it was a friend and all..As a matter of fact,my intention on buying this DVD was because of the featurettes..The money spent was well worth it and no problem..I knew what i was getting into..It almost seems Dave wrote the review after watching only the featurettes, some bit's and pieces of the film, but not the whole thing..because he did'nt mention all the comic book adds throughout the movie..Knowing Mr Walker,i believe he definately would have done that..I'm not going to assume..but i've kinda got that impression..He is of coarse extremely busy with his hands chocked full of many projects at once..I can relate to that.

I can however understand how he may have thought that the movie was going to be the same as previous, because I did the same thing..Why?..Because on the DVD liner notes, the ads,the intro by Walter Hill never exclusively mention that there is all new footage..effects..etc..It was somewhat vague and really up to us to figure it out ourselves..Feel me?

I'm gonna post a new thread with my final assumption, opinion and review sometime soon on this DVD and everything involved with it..Because this time i've 'really' evaluated the film entirely and the whole scenario surrounding it..Paramount..Rockstar..Sponsers..The whole nine.

I will tell you this,it's more positive than negative..Peace, M69 ;)
