who is luther talking to?

Post by emissary »

Would he really be "checking in" with anybody besides a superior or authority of some sort? Street cops might look at him as a punk but what about the anti-gang unit? Maybe Luther is talking to his girlfriend, but if so, it shatters my image of him. Youth worker, that seems very possible and I can accept that because they probably require checking in.

I'm gonna float a crazy theory here. So crazy that I don't even know if I buy it.

Luther is talking to Masai. Masai didn't want the gangs to unify and would't have minded if he gained control over the largest gang in the city. So he gets Luther, arguably the most sociopathic of all gang leaders in the Riffs network, to shoot him and also tells him to blame it on someone else so he can keep doing Masai's dirty work. However, when a witness comes forward and fingers The Rogues Masai knows that he has to act. He's in a win-win situation. His loose end gets tied up and he looks like a hero, cementing is place in power.

Luther chooses words ("These guys...", "had an accident..." etc.) that distance himself from the act in case anyone on the street overhears him.

Like I said, it was a crazy notion I had and I'm not sure I even believe it. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Wolverine, AS Murtaugh would say to Riggs "Pretty thin" but hey the thin answer showed to be the right answer in Lethal Weapon. You may be on to something.

Whoever it was (this debate keeps getting better; it's even better than the Kennedy assassination theories) we'll never know.

I will say this I really don't think it was a girl. Luther just seems like the kind of guy who would never check in with a female.

I always thought Luther was talking to his woman.

"Take care of yourself" Who would he say this to? He bashes his own gang members.

"yeah, this guy cyrus, he had an accident" Why would he have to inform anyone of this breaking news? Anyone with any knowledge or an FM radio would know what's up.

He's talking to his girlfriend and she gives him updates throughout the movie.

Do you know why I'm so happy about it? BECAUSE I AM HAVING FUN!

If Luther does have a "girlfriend" I would guess she is about as in the loop as Carmela Soprano. But, you never know, maybe he is a hopeless romantic who tells his woman everything. I know guys like that. But usually you can tell. Luther seems like an abusive, lunatic who as a boyfriend would have his woman on a need-to-know basis. I think the "accident" line wasn't really informing the person on the other line of something they weren't expecting. That's why I gotta go with Youth worker, Rogue superior, Riff, or cop.

Could the second phone call have been with someone other than the first? The second call is very vague. The first indicates somebody with some authority over him. He comes off the second with created, not natural, enthusiasm. He is an awful communicator with his troops. Unlike Cleon/Swan. My point is I suspect he's up to something that even the Rogues aren't totally in on.

I think that it could be two different people.  Possibly a girl the first time. I think the Riffs the second time because he receives word that the Warriors slipped passed the Orphans.  Of course it could be a girl both times and she just heard about the Orphans on the radio.

i also felt that the informer was one of the rogues.  maybe he was one of luther's punching bags and got fed up.  he turns luther in, in hopes that the rest of the gang may be spared.

I was thinking, now more than ever, the search function is important.  Even to veterans because of Karma.  How many brilliant Warriors statements have you read since you've been here?  I've read some great ones.  Don't they deserve Karma?  We have to follow the one per hour rule, but if nothing immediate seems worthy, think about some of the great posts in history.

I have new dialogue to point to in defense of my cops theory.  Luther's second asks if "we're set.". A little bit after, Luther asks, in a way suggesting its inevitable, "You afraid the Warriors are gonna shoot their mouths off..."  Now this doesn't prove anything, but I never before connected in even my mind Luther's words about the Warriors getting racked, and his call.  Also, his words "..pick their ass up"  more of a cop action.

I'm thinking that Luther may have been working with the police and talking to them on the phone simply because during the scene at the meeting it seemed that he timed his assassination of Cyrus with the time the police chose to pull their raid.  Maybe his shot was suppose to be the signal for the cops to move in, and he just decided (cause he likes doing things like that) to shoot Cyrus for the heck of it?

The shooting of Cyrus was a hit. I believe that Luther had been hired or encouraged by someone outside of the gang network to take out Cyrus.

For a long time I thought it was a cop, but I agree that the cops would know who Cyrus was and probably would not want a total mental case like Luther running around shooting people.

The answer is simple, Luther was talking to and was hired by a member of a crime syndicate such as the Mafia or the Triads. The uniting of all the street gangs did not just threaten the cops but also the crime syndicates. Remember Cyrus's speech at the conclave. He say's something along the lines of.

"We tax the police, the crime syndicates. Nothing would move without us knowing about it, because we got the streets suckers."

The Mafia/Triads would not know who Cyrus was, They would probably not even distinguish between the different street gangs. If someone was going to threaten their empire they would just want him to be taken out, they wouldn't care who he was. They would not do it themselves as they would not risk everything just to kill someone they would regard as a 'street punk'. It fits in with Luthers respectful tone and at the end when he say's

"I just like doing things like that."

he still thought he was going to get away with it. Maybe he did not want to let slip who was behind it in case of Mafia/Triad reprisals. Luther probably thought he could gain money/power/rep by doing the Mafia or whoevers dirty work.

I don't buy the girlfriend/Lizzies theory or the one about Luther not being the leader of the Rogues. Also why would he be talking to his social worker about gang matters/politics?

Cyrus's death was a mafia sanctioned hit.

Eh, I think it was some older fellow back home who listened to the radio for updates. Luther would call this old person at home to make sure the Warriors weren't gonna mess things up for Luther and the Rogues. Luther just shot Cyrus cause it would screw stuff up and he would seem sorta powerful; he took down The One And Only. He always says, "You take care of yourself" cause he's old and shows respect cause he need this person for updates. Personally, I don't even know why the Rogues got invited to the meeting. They don't seem too big, all they have is a gun.

This is an older thread but there are some Warriors here who've never given an opinion.  Plus, this is one of those Stanley Cup threads.  (Because all the legends names are on it).  So if you're relatively new, what do you say?  Who is he talking to?
