Friday Night for Cowboy *FINISHED 8/8/06*

Post by Warrior_Swan »

Friday Evening - 6 PM

The chicken burned his fingers as he rushed to eat it. It had just come out of the oven, and he was starving. His mother warned him, but he didn?t listen. Cowboy was anything but patient when it came to food. He was sitting on the run-down mud-colored sofa with a TV tray before him, holding his plate of food. On it were a few pieces of fried chicken, a modest pile of corn, and a nice helping of mashed potatoes, bathed in salt, just how he liked them. The match game was on as his mother rushed around the house gathering her things. ?You sure you?ll be OK here by yourself all weekend?? Cowboy sighed and dropped his chicken down on the plate. ?Damn it, mom, I?m not a  little kid anymore, OK?? She shook her head as she walked briskly by the TV set again. ?That?s right, I forgot. You?re a big man now, Mr. Warrior. You and your moron friends make the papers, and now suddenly you?re hot stuff, huh?? Cowboy stood quickly. ?Hey, you know I?m makin? something of myself now, mom. Thank you so very friggin? much! I have somewhere I belong for once. Christ knows I never belonged here!?
?Alright smartass, you keep telling yourself that. But what happens when you?re 18, huh? When you?re outta high school? Then you get in real trouble, cuz you?ll be a damn adult.?
?Aw, shut up, ma, what the hell do you know??
?I know you better quit talkin? to me like that. Bill would kick your ass if he heard you talkin? to me like that.?
?Oh, Mr. Big Bill, huh? Mr. Friggin? tough guy, your new boyfriend? How many dudes are you gonna bang before you find one with a big enough-?
?Shut it!?

Cowboy narrowed his eyes, shook his head, and grabbed his hat off the back of the arm chair. He turned and kicked over his TV tray.  On his way out the door, he grabbed his set of keys and slammed the big wooden door behind him. There were tears in his eyes as he made his way quickly down the apartment stairs. He wiped them away again and again with the backs of his hands, but they wouldn?t stop.

He came out onto the street in the late afternoon light. Summer was ending, and the days were growing shorter. He looked down the street, watching the hotdog stand. He was still hungry, his dinner was all over the floor in the apartment. He made his way down to the hotdog guy and bought one smothered in relish. He wolfed it down quickly, then walked down to the hangout. He was thirsty, and he was sure there would be beer there. He popped open the door, and stepped inside. It was smoky, as always. Ajax spotted him and moved quickly over, handing him a cold bottle of beer. Cowboy nodded when he took it. ?It?s Friday night buddy! Have a good time!? Ajax said to him excitedly. Cowboy nodded again and twisted the cap off his cold bottle. He took a long swig, and sat down on a stool by the door. Swan made his way over, nursing his drink and carrying two unopened ones in his other hand. ?Come on, Cowboy, let?s take a walk, ok? It?s too loud in here.? Cowboy stood and followed him out the door and down the stairs.

The two Warriors walked along the street in the fading light. ?We?re going up to Moonrunners turf tonight, you know. Tax night, our first one. Me and Vermin and Ajax are going up there. Snowball and Cochise are heading up to Soho to see what?s up. We hear the Hi-Hats are talkin? a lotta trash. They?re taking some new bloods up there with ?em to break ?em in. You and Rembrandt are the only ones left, but I think he might have to go somewhere with his mom or something like that, I don?t know. So I need you to stay here and look after things for a while, keep the rest of the new blood in order, ok??
?Yeah, I can do that, Warchief. It?s all good.?
?Alright. Good.? Swan discarded his empty beer bottle, and handed a fresh one to Cowboy, then opened his own and began nursing on it. Cowboy finished his, then opened the fresh one. Swan spoke again. ?You should be alright, I don?t see anything going wrong here.?

Friday Night - 10:00

Cowboy lounged in the hangout, comfortable in the old smelly sofa, listening to AC/DC on the transistor. He felt pretty good, all in all. He was well relaxed, calm even. He was alone in the building, which was alright with him. Achilles entered and sat in the arm chair opposite him. He was a good soldier, but brand-new. He had a lot to learn. His long-ish wavy blonde hair was unkempt, and he was overweight, but he knew how to brawl. That?s what really mattered.
?Hey, Cowboy,? he said, ?Some of us feel like pickin? up some wool, ya wanna come??
?What kinda wool??
?Well, Bert?s looking to score some Spanish tang, and Ernie?s up for whatever he?s doin?.?
Cowboy laughed. ?Why the hell did we name them Bert and Ernie? That?s just goofy.?
?Hey, don?t look at me , buddy, they been here longer than me.?
?Yeah, I get ya. So where we goin?? Spanish Harlem? Hurricane Turf??
?That?s the plan.?
?Alright, let?s go, I could use a little wool. First things first, we gotta make sure the Hurricanes are cool with us comin? down there. I don?t feel like getting japped tonight.?

The train stopped at the platform in Spanish Harlem, just a few blocks down from Stripes and Solids, the joint they were planning to hit. Cowboy and the other 3 stepped out into the street lights and looked around. There was a group of Hurricanes sitting on a stoop in front of a rugged-looking home. Cowboy walked over cautiously, the others following. ?Hey guys,? he said cheerfully.
?What the hell you Warriors doing up here on our turf?? The one who spoke stood and stepped toward Cowboy.
?We?re just looking for a little fun, man, we?re not down here for war. In fact I was wondering if your leader wouldn?t mind coming down so I could ask him personally.?
?Okay, we?ll see if he feels like seeing you dorks.?
Cowboy nodded politely and stepped over to the other Warriors. Achilles piped up.
?What the hell is this man? You just gonna let him run his mouth like this??
?Look, if we get hostile we can get in some trouble out here. No matter what they say, be cool, and keep your mouths shut. I wouldn?t wanna have to tell Swan to get Ajax to kick some of your asses.?
The Hurricane came back. ?Okay Warriors, Vargas says you guys can hang  out for a while, but no trouble. You guys do anything stupid and we?ll mess you up, but good.?
Cowboy tipped his hat. ?Thanks, fellas.?

The Warriors started walking down the street towards Stripes and Solids. It was a dark street, most of the lights had been burned out. Cowboy led them down an alley halfway down the block, and around a couple corners until they came to the neon sign above the Stripes and Solids. Cowboy knocked on the door, and it was opened a crack, revealing a squat Spanish man. ?Vargas told me you might be comin? by and to let you in.? Cowboy smiled and said, ?Great. So how ?bout it??
?I dunno, what kinda cash you got??
?Aw, c?mon man, we ain?t got that much, we just wanna play some pool, have a few drinks, meet some chicks, and have a good time. That?s all, man, I swear. No trouble, we?ll be going right back to the train when we leave here in a couple hours, ok??
The Spanish man grunted, then opened the door all the way, and stepped aside. The Warriors entered and found an open pool table. Cowboy and Achilles grabbed the pool cues that were on the table, Bert and Ernie had to go get theirs from the rack on the wall. ?Me and Achilles against you two?? Cowboy asked. Everyone nodded and agreed. Ernie broke, sending the balls every which way. A clean break all in all, but nothing went in.
?Now what the hell is going on here?? A voice yelled across the room. Cowboy looked over his shoulder and saw two large Hurricanes making their way over.
?This is our table.?
?We?re just trying to have a little fun man, we?re not looking to start no trouble,? Cowboy said calmly.
?Whether you?re looking or not, ya found it.?
Achilles got in his face, and shoved him back. ?Back off,? he said. Cowboy grabbed his elbow and spoke. ?Come on man, don?t start nothing. You can?t run if it gets heavy.?
?So who wants to run? Maybe we should teach these guys a lesson.?
?Back off, Achilles.?
One of the Hurricanes swings at Achilles, who takes it dead on, and seems unfazed.
?Let?s go, Warriors!? Cowboy yells, and the 4 take off out the door and down the alley. They all split up, going their own ways. Cowboy was alone in a dark alley, unaware of his surroundings, breathing heavily. He leaned against a wall trying to catch his breath.

I just named him Achilles because I'm trying to stay pretty consistent with the pop culture of the times, and Led Zeppelin was huge in '79, and he's named for the song "Achille's Last Stand" by them. I still haven't figured out what type of character he is.  ;)
So technically, he is named after the Greek Warrior.

Thanks for the feedback everybody, I appreciate and I'm glad you enjoy it, gives me a reason to keep writing.

Friday night - 11:00 PM

Cowboy moved as quietly as he could, straining his eyes to see in the darkness and trying not to bump into or trip over anything. The alley was pretty tight, and he started feeling claustrophobic. The air was still and hot, his t-shirt drenched in sweat. He heard a noise and jumped. Two cats ran by and around the corner.
?Jesus, Cowboy, get a grip, will ya?? he said quietly to himself.

He kept moving. He began to panic. His breathing became heavy, his heart began to beat faster and harder, he was sure everyone on the block could hear it. He strongly considered ditching his vest. If the Hurricanes found him with a Warriors vest, he was sure to get japped, but just a civilian, he might be able to squeak by. But if he lost his vest, he was sure to get wrecked by the rest of the Warriors, and kicked out for sure.
He came to the end of the alley, which was inevitable. He stooped at the edge of the shadows, and looked around. He saw some Spanish kids playing and dancing in the street, and a group of girls hanging around a stoop. Salsa music could be heard echoing down the street. He smiled and stepped out into the light, and walked right down the middle of  the street toward the girls. They all looked up at him when he came near. He tipped his hat and gave his best smile. ?Ladies.?

Achilles sat against a wall amidst a pile of garbage in a dark back alley. His chest heaved and his hair was soaked with sweat. He was having trouble catching his breath and his legs hurt too much to move them. He was wishing he had gone against orders and stayed to fight. He would probably be in less pain then. He sat still a few moments longer, and caught his breath a little. He slowly rose to shaky legs. He grabbed his wallet and unhooked the 40 inch chain from it, then replaced it in his pocket. He unhooked the other end from his belt loop in the front, and connected the two ends, making a loop. He gripped the clip tightly, using it as a handle for his new whip. ?Anyone comes after me is leavin? black and freakin? blue.? He wrapped the chain around his hand, and made a fist. Now his fist was fortified by metal chain links, more weight, and the links are more likely to break skin and cause extra pain, plus bleeding.
Achilles slowly moved down the alley. His legs were killing him. He had trouble walking steadily. It would wear off enough to walk normally soon.

Cowboy talked to a beautiful Spanish girl. The two sat alone on a stoop, and he hung on her every word. He was lost in her big, brown eyes, and the golden highlights in her hair which shimmered in the dull street light. He wasn?t even paying attention to what she was saying, he just liked hearing her voice. ?So tell me, what brings you up here all the way from Coney Island?? she asked him. He didn?t hear her at first, but a second later it dawned on him she had asked him a question. He fumbled for words, ?Well uh, ya know, we were uh.? And she laughed. He began again, ?Me a couple other guys just thought we?d come up here and see if we could find a little something to do. Coney was getting boring, we wanted a change of environment. And boy, I sure am glad we did. I tell ya, you brighten up any environment. Right now, I feel like the world could end and I wouldn?t hear it.?

Achilles was standing at the edge of an alley, looking up and down a street with his back to the alley. He was breathing a little better and his heart had slowed down to a normal pace. He felt a sharp stabbing pain in his right thigh, and yelled out. When he looked, he saw a blade jammed into his skin. He was instantly angry. He grabbed the blade and whirled around, searching the alley. He could vaguely see the shape of a Hurricane stumbling and falling over a trash can. He stuffed the blade in the pocket of his faded blue jeans, then went after the Hurricane. He wrapped his chain around the Hurricane?s neck, and used it as a handle to repeatedly smash his face into the concrete ground. Blood had splattered all over the walls and ground when Achilles finally decided he had enough. ?You dirty FAGGOT!? He screamed, ?no one sticks me and gets away with it.?

Achilles stepped out into the street lights, breathing heavily, growling with each breath and baring his teeth. The Warriors liked having him around because in a battle he was unpredictable, fearless, and when he raged, he became feral, a wild beast. Nothing could hurt him when he was like that, even Ajax was a little unnerved by him. Now he growled and grunted like an animal, hunched over, prowling as he walked, ready to tear up anybody that got in his way. He turned the corner and saw Cowboy on a stoop with a girl. He heard him say, ?The world could end and I wouldn?t hear it.? He stepped up to the couple and grunted. ?Quit it with this wimpy cheese-fest and get some real lines. But first, let?s get moving, I?m so mad right now, Cowboy, somebody?s dying tonight.? Cowboy sighed and looked to the Spanish girl. She smiled and said, ?If you?ve got paper, I?ll give you my number.? Achilles pulled out his wallet and produced a receipt from the XXX shop, then handed it to the girl. Without looking at it, she pulled a pen from her purse and wrote on it, quickly, then handed it to Cowboy with a kiss on the cheek. ?Call me, OK?? She said as she stood and walked away.

Cowboy stood with Achilles, and read the slip of paper. She had written her phone number,  with her name above it. ?Bella? that?s a nice name, ya know?? Cowboy said. Achilles rolled his eyes. ?Come on, man, let?s move it!? Cowboy flipped over the paper.

This fan fic is good, real good. I'm liking the Achilles character too, even though he wasn't in the movie or even the game I can kind of picture him and his personality. Good stuff :D
SUPER HAPPY PINEAPPLE MAN!
