Just read the book
I'm new to this site but just as hardcore as any of you. I just finished reading the book for the first time and found that the movie is different, but contains a lot of usefull info. I see a lot of discussion about Swan's kidnapping by a gay gang. Well in the book, it's not exactly a kidnapping. It's more of a moment he has with a gay guy following him and he ends up in their bathroom party. He willingly leaves on his own to eat more and conquer a game in the subway station.
Anyway, lots of cool stuff here. Definately the best Warriors site...

I read the book myself. I support you on your observation that the book is certainly different from the film.
I would like to know what's your interpretation of the end of the book and how certain elements are linked to some characters in the movie.
Salud.

I've read the book too and it doesn't really follow the movie at all, but it's just as interesting. Everyone has different names and the scenarios are different.

Re: Just read the book
Good question. I found the closing scene of the book put everything in perspective. It just wrapped up the idea that these guys were just kids dealing with problems in their immediate families that drove them to seek an Alternate family where they actually cared for each other. Something that occurs often in broken homes.LATEM wrote:

The book/movie discrepancies, relationship, etc., were discussed earlier in other threads... which, I'm fairly certain, are still to be found in the General forum.

I did a practically chapter by chapter review a couple months back. Look for it, it's still around.

Just read the book
I just joined the site after reading the forum. After I saw the movie I went out and got the book, knowing that it wasn't the same as the movie. I thought the characters were very realistic and it seemed that a lot of the danger they thought they were in was just their own paranoia, like when they were waiting for their case worker to come and pick them up and they thought a gang or the police were going to ambush them. They probably would have been fine if they justed stayed until he showed up. Mostly I think they let their own fears get the best of them.
I also came across Sol Yurick's "The Bag" and it's a semi sequel to the warriors. But don't get to excited it's mostly about how screwed up the welfare system is in New York told through a case worker. It does have Hinton (the character that is the basis for Swan/Rembrant in the movie) in it after he leaves the Dominators and talks about his family, particularily his mom. And it tells about what happens to Ismael (Cyrus), yes he lives but that's all I'll say. The most exciting part is when a neighbourhood class war breaks out at the end, but it's an anti-climatic ending.
Great site, glad to be here!

While I will agree that Rembrant is based on Hinton---I really think Swan is based on Hector.

Thinking more about it I guess you're right, it's just that Hinton was the one who walked through the subway tunnels and was one of the few who managed to get back to Coney. That was where I was thinking Swan.

I only say one thing not Homophobic but....Thank god they never filmed the scene wher swan gets kidnapped or leaves or whatever with the gang of gays.
The Furies with the clown faces and Baseball bats is enough.

Yes, they did take lots of different aspects from all the different book characters to create the movie characters, and they all tend to bleed over alittle bit.
You are right about the subway--and him making it back.
SCRIPT SPOILERS: DON't GO ANY FARTHER UNLESS YOU LIKE ALITTLE MORE INFO:
.....................
......................
When Swan was caught by the Dingos gang---the only real tendency towards the sexual aspect was that they more or less called him "lady" part of the time and refered to him like "she won't talk.", it really seemed like they were more focused on showing S&M characteristics--whips, shackels, vicious dogs---leather type stuff---they don't get into any descriptions of anything towards rape, except his legs and feet are bare---and they have him a straight jacket and it describes welts, cuts and bruises all over his back, evidently they took his vest too..
