I think they get thier nick names early on. Like my nick name's Milk Dud. My name Mickayla is shorten to Miki. Got in a fight with somebody and the teacher made him right an appolgy(cant spell) When she read it to the class to teach us not to fight she read the way he wrote my name wrong:Milky. Got changed to milk dud and has stuck ever scince.Every one thoght it was funny and it stuck. Thats how nick names ussaly happen. Its a joke thats funny and after a wile it just sticks and thats your new name.

Here's my take. Nicknames are generally given, this is agreed by all us street people with an ear for the action. Cleon is a greek warrior if i'm not mistaken, could be that Cleon is interested in Greek Mythology, and gave out a few greek names as he saw fit. Ajax for instance, cuz Ajax was a badass fighter, just as Ajax is in the movie, and so on. The script says Fox comes from "Frances" and the fact that he's cunning and swift or something along those lines. Swan, I think, is most likely a shortened form of a last name, OR from Led Zeppelin's recording label "Swan Song". He looks like he was probably a Zep fan. Cochise probably picked his name up from the native american, as he dresses like an indian, Cowboy is obvious, Rembrandt comes from him being a painter, Snowball I always thought had something to do with his massive affro, and Vermin I assumed was because he was so damn hairy, like vermin.

:D  This reminds me of that sean in Animal House where Bluto is givin out named to Pinto and Flounder. Pinto askes "Why Pinto?" Then Bluto responds "WHY NOT!!" I think it kind of happens like that. They probly get them when their new bloods.

Well the names are given to you for some reason, you just cant pick your own nicknme, well at least not here where i live. Something about the personality of the person, like Cowboy is named for his hat. But who knows about cleon... since he is the one that started it all.

I always figured it like this:

Cleon- either real name, or because he is a good negotiator, leader, etc.
Swan- I always figured that his last name was Swanson or something.
Ajax- because of the greek soldier.
Vermin- made fun of for hairy chest, possibly smells bad?
Cowboy- duh...
Snow- maybe somebody made a joke about his hair, and it stuck?
Fox- stealthy like a fox.
Rembrandt- great tagger.
Cochise- indian clothing.

They probley get there nick names for what they do. Some of them any way. Either that or they just want
to be called that. Who wants to use there real name any way? Short for something.
