Star Trek: Enterprise - "In A Mirror Darkly"

Post by Marlboroprojects »

Did anybody catch this 2 episode story arc the past couple of weeks? All I can say is......WOW

Where have these stories been for the past 4 years??? Why did it have to wait for the anouncement that the series has been cancelled for episodes of this caliber to be made. I can only think what might have been.

For those who watch Enterprise & aren't that familiar with the original Star Trek series, or for you treckies who don't (or won't) watch Enterprise:

********************SPOILERS*********************************

This story arc deals with the mirror universe first shown in the original Trek episode "Mirror,Mirror". This is the one where Kirk, Scott, McCoy, & Uhura beam aboard the Enterprise in an alternate universe due to a transporter malfunction. The Federation has been replaced with "The Empire". Spock has a beard, crew members routinely assasinate thier superiors in order to move up in rank, and torture is common punishment for the crew.

In this episode of Enterprise, a number of cool twists & references to the original series are present. The entire opening credits has been changed to reflect the mirror universe. The last shot that normally shows the astronaut planting the U.S. flag on the moon has been changed to show him planting the flag of the Empire.

This episode also is a bit of a continuation of an original series episode called "The Tholian Web." This is the one where Kirk is trapped aboard a Starship, the USS Defiant, that is slipping in and out of reality. At the end of the episode, Kirk is rescued (naturally), but we don't know what happened to the defiant when it dissappeared for good. Well we know now.

In Enterprise, the crew is all thier mirror universe personas, ie: evil. Captain Archer and his crew steal the defiant from the Tholians and plot to take over with Archer becoming the new Emporer. That is until he's betrayed by "The Captain's Woman". The great thing about these type of episodes is that ANYONE can die and anyone who is dead on the regular storyline can be brought back.

There's also an appearance of a CGI enhanced Gorn, a lizard like alien that hasn't been seen since the original series.

I heard Enterprise had been cancelled but I thought there was a successful campaign or drive to bring it back for another season? I remember the mirror universe episode from the original series. Would like to have seen this one. Maybe it'll turn up in syndication.

Nope, only 3 episodes left. The problem with the series has been that for every episode like the mirror one, there have been countless clunkers. Plus a lot of continuity problems that completely turned off many hard core Trek fans. The guys who wrote the mirror episode have written the best episodes of the series.

We can only hope that a cable network like FX or SciFi would be interested and bring it back with only these two guys writing but that is very unlikely.

I was hoping this episode would repeat but expected it later in the summer. Probably would've missed it had it not been for your update so thanks :) Are you a sci-fi fan or just a Star Wars and Trekkie aficionado? I never got into Star Wars but loved the original Star Trek and DS9...also collect Battlestar Galactica memorabilia.

I guess you could say I'm a selective sci fi fan. I'm quirky with the stuff I like. I'm really into Star Wars (as you could tell), I liked the original Trek & TNG, didn't like DS9 or voyager.

I liked some movies like Wing Commander & Starship Troopers, but I'm not into Dune or The Highlander or anything like that.

I also thought the stand alone episodes of the X-Files were pretty cool, but when they got into the whole alien abduction/conspiracy thing I couldn't watch.

Never ceases to amaze me -LOL--I felt exactly the same way about X-Files.
And I never got into Dune either.

I am an original Trekkie too--but after that I sort of got lost, and the rest of the space stuff except the first three Starwars just didn't grab me, but maybe I was to busy to pay attention.

Have to admit though---I am a Highlander freak---guilty pleasure--but the first movie and the original tv series---never seem to get enough of them. But the rest of them no--not there.
Was very disappointed in the very last movie though--did not do it right in my opinion.

Hey Raven - did you catch it??

Believe it or not, I didn't know this was 2 parts and I never saw this one, the one I saw must have been the second part that will be on next week!!!

This one was even better than the 2nd part, with even more references to the original series. I had so many mark out moments I lost track:

* The "Booth" - where they torture crew members

* During the opening credits - Zephram Cochran blowing away the Vulcan with a shotgun instead of shaking hands.

* When they board the Enterprise from the future - the dead crew members are all wearing the original uniforms, and naturally the first dead guy they come across is the red shirt security guard

* The original series phaser that Archer finds on board.

God I wish some of the other episodes were even half this good
