Well that's an interesting question, he didn't want to take them on when there were 4 warriors, yet when it was just him and Cowboy he says "I'm sick of running from thses wimps!".

Perhaps he wanted to prove that he could handle things by hilmself, and saw the opprotunity (in what would have been extremely foolish had the Furies actually put up a fight) when Swan was gone.

The easiest answer would of course be though: To get a chase scene :p

Good point guys.  Yes, Ajax is arrogant and stobborn.  But first and for most he is a soldier of an army.  He as to protect his fellow brothers, and fight along side them no matter how he feels.  Also lets not forget, that this movie is not about the supernatural.  Although Ajax is tough, he realizes that he's not immortal.  You see, we than realize that women is Ajax weakness.  So when theres a fight, he can control himself.  But when it comes to women, it is unevidable for him to grt himself into trouble.  So my point is, he has loyalty some where inside of him.
