Did You Know Rockstar Games Planned a Spiritual Successor to The Warriors Game?

Rockstar Games, who created the 3D beat-em-up game based on The Warriors movie apparently considered making a ‘spiritual successor’ to the game according to Kotaku.

The game was supposedly going to be based in the UK during the 1960’s during the Mods vs Rockers brawls. A now deleted website post from Matt Kazan who used to work at Rockstar Toronto as an environmental artist said:

The project had begun as a PlayStation 2 spiritual follow-up to the earlier hit ‘The Warriors’, but part way through the development cycle Rockstar New York asked us to switch Mods from a Sixth Generation to a Seventh Generation development, changing from the PlayStation 2 to the Xbox 360 as the primary development platform. Much of the content here reflects that change, with Mods being the first Seventh Generation project the team had worked on. It was a learning experience for everyone involved. The game was similar in design and style to “The Warriors” but set in 1960’s England at the height of the “Mods” vs. “Rockers” era.

It sounds like the game would have been a lot of fun despite it not being a true sequel. Knowing Rockstar, I am sure they would have made some references to The Warriors in the game. I still hold out hope that there will be a new Warriors game in the future.
